Talk about a shit thread. We frown on dropping a link with a single line of trite commentary around here. You actually have anything to say about this, or should be expedite this thread to Chit Chat? 10/31/2006 1:48:37 PM |
bgmims All American 5895 Posts user info edit post |
^agree.
Come on now, you have to discuss the link instead of just dropping it.
Methinks: This will get overblown in some circles and underblown (much like the captain of the chess team) in others. I wish we could release this information as if Cheney said it and see people's reactions first. That'd be a fun experiment.

It was the lead story on rush limbaugh's show today. Of course there is no context. He told all his listeners to go listen to the 10 second clip so they did and then they rushed to their message board of choice and posted it. 10/31/2006 2:02:08 PM |

I'm a big fan of context too, but I'm not really sure I can conceive of a believable context in which that sentence doesn't imply that those in the military are the ones who don't do well in school or who aren't smart.
Maybe if he prefaced that statement with "I totally don't believe..." 10/31/2006 2:28:52 PM |

The way that Republicans focus on one line from this speech validates the other 99% of it.
There were no truer words spoken than what I just heard him say on TV. Granted, its very strange coming from him since all he did during election time was tell the people what he thought they wanted to hear. 10/31/2006 2:53:24 PM |

I know someone who served in Iraq 1 that basically told me the same thing a few years back in HS. He said something like "some of you guys are so smart, don't be a dumbass like me and join the military, I didn't know what I was doing." Kerry is an idiot for believing that, but it's not that uncommon of a sentiment. 10/31/2006 3:00:23 PM |

Most of the people in ROTC in HS weren't exactly the brightest either. And someone else I know was strongly encouraged to join to escape some legal hardships.
There's only a few people I know who were very intelligent, that joined for reasons not having to do with not being able to do anything else. 10/31/2006 3:18:14 PM |

im on the left side of things, but that statement sounds horrible. i dont care how he meant it, it came out horribly and he needs to apoligize.
strong retort tho:
Quote : | "... These Republicans are afraid to debate veterans who live and breathe the concerns of our troops, not the empty slogans of an Administration that sent our brave troops to war without body armor. Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they’re afraid to debate real men. And this time it won’t work because we’re going to stay in their face with the truth and deny them even a sliver of light for their distortions. No Democrat will be bullied by an administration that has a cut and run policy in Afghanistan and a stand still and lose strategy in Iraq.” " |

Kerry had this to say: "I'm not going to be lectured by a stuffed-suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium, or doughy Rush Limbaugh, who no doubt today will take a break from belittling Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease to start lying about me just as they have lied about Iraq."
And supposedly, his statement was suppose to be a knock at Bush, meaning that if you're an idiot and stuff, you'll get the country stuck in Iraq (like Bush did), not that you'd be a soldier personally stuck in Iraq. 10/31/2006 4:10:06 PM |

it looks bad, definitely. but lets be honest, the valedictorians of our high schools didnt enlist in the army.
i have 3 cousins that joined the army right after high school because they just didnt take it seriously, and upon graduating they really had no options. now they are in iraq. (and one in S. korea)
i have no idea why he said it, and it sounds pretty offensive. whether it was a botched joke, or whatever, he fucked up! because this shit is going to get spun 23942 different ways for the next week

this is a prime example of the similarities between democrats and republicans. whenever a republican says something controversial the democrats eat them alive. now it's happening to the democrats. this is nothing more than a simple comment taken out of contents. any fucking one of you that has common sense would realize that a VETERAN is NOT calling our soldiers idiots. he is simply saying that if you don't get an education, then very few jobs will be available to you, and with the huge need for soldiers, ODDS are you'll end up in the military in iraq 10/31/2006 4:35:22 PM |

That's a cute characterization. Kerry was a hockey player while Bush was a cheerleader, that is true. But they both belonged to the same secret society and they were absolutely both spoiled rich kids.
Kerry spent his youth yachting with the Kennedy's. That isn't what the average non-spoiled rich kid does with his summers.10/31/2006 5:10:11 PM |

Well, yes, it is sad that our soldiers get this treatment and that more people don't feel the need to serve in some capacity. This all started in the 1960s, when the nobility of the soldier was shattered by the left as a ploy against the Vietnam War and a shot against anti-communism. You saw not only students protesting and vandalizing ROTC buildings, but you also saw radicals like John Kerry degrading their fellow soldiers by throwing away their medals, awarded to them for protecting and serving the citizens who now ridiculed them. Whether or not the war was right or not, we should never degrade those who put their lives on the line for ALL of us, as they did through their acts of disrespect. The anti-war movemement seeped over into the media, and soon the media was echoing the defeatist agenda we're seeing now: "we cannot win, the war is a waste", making the mission of the soldiers seem lost and the lives they put on the line seem meaningless. when the soldiers returned home, we forgot about them and disrespected them, and many ended up homeless and drug addicts. american pride was dead, and the leadership did nothing to help it until the Reagan Revolution of the 1980s. We need more Reagan and less Kerry. We need to honor our troops. Sadly, the left and the media continues to paint them as "tortureres, killers, and idiots". It's sad, dispicable, and pathetic.10/31/2006 5:13:04 PM |

i believe it started when we began fighting wars which did very little to actually protect our country and instead began fighting wars in the pursuit of the illusion of safety.
I believe our soldiers deserve the very best and fighting in wars which create this mask of safety for the citizens of the US while putting them through shit in a stange country is not for the best. 10/31/2006 5:35:13 PM |
