I'm thinking about applying for some positions at the NC Zoo, but I must admit that I don't know anything about Asheboro. Maybe someone from around there could tell me how big the city is, if it's expensive, and if I wanted a part-time night job waiting tables, are there a lot of restaurants around there?

I lived near Asheboro for 6 years and I have family down that way. The city isn't big at all. Most of it can be seen driving down two streets. US64 & Fayetteville Street.

I still picture it as a dying town (people's kids move away if they are able to), even though it has grown a bit since I lived near there. I'd attribute some of that growth to a fairly new Super Wal-Mart that serves as the regional Wal-Mart hub for surrounding rural areas.

I worked there for a year.

The town is terrible. HORRIBLE drug problems, lots of meth and coke fiends. It's a dry town so there are no bars, and you have to drive 15 minutes to buy any alcohol. Not a lot of opportunities there business-wise, most of the people have a VERY big fish in a small pond attitude which makes it pretty difficult to get anything done.

Basically it sucked, I met a lot of extremely dishonest and shady ass people who are considered "prominate members of the community" and thanked god I commuted instead of moving anywhere near the place.

Yeah, I'd go out on a limb and say that there aren't any high paying or decent jobs either. If you want a decent job and you live in Asheboro you are going to be stuck with a commute to Greensboro.

Like Lutra said, its a rural "big" city. It really depends on what part of Asheboro you are coming from and what part of Greensboro you are going to. It's a straight shot up 220. Anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes.

It only takes 8 minutes TOPS to get to Randleman from Asheboro (the closest place to buy beer). Greensboro is about 20-25 mins from Asheboro. It really depends on the type of work you are looking for as to the money, opportunities, etc. There are some good paying jobs there, you just have to know what you are looking for. Not all of Asheboro is trashy, parts are-yes.

Its 25 minutes from most of Gboro to asheboro. It's an 1:15 from Raleigh to Asheboro, and it's actually a pretty nice drive, all things considered.

And yea, you aren't going to make shit there doing anything. Except selling drugs maybe. The zoo pretty much keeps the town propped up.

I used to live in Asheboro for 13 years, and its a shit hole. The whole county is under the control of 80 year old conservative men who have no grasp on reality and disapprove of ANYTHING even moderately liberal. No alcohol on Sundays, no alcohol at all in Asheboro, and a bunch of backward laws like cats need to be on leashes and such. Everyone who gets past high school from the area leaves, leaving behind only idiotic dropouts and lazy community college slackers. The area is heavy on textile mill workers, but all mills in the county have switched to 4 or 4.5 day weeks, so traffic is bad at all times on Fridays as everyone drives down to the Wal-Mart to spend their checks. Jobs are impossible to find, and if you do get one it won't pay shit.

Avoid Randolph County at all costs.

i lived there from 8th grade until college, nothing to do, no good restaurants, and it is dry.....you have to go to Greensboro...it is only known for the Zoo....oh, no good jobs either for a young person(for the most part)..basically people move there to retire and die....

Pretty much sums it up. I lived there until I got done with high school and now I'm back here for a few months and hate every day I live here. I do all I can to go to another city almost everyday just to get the hell out of this piece of shit town.

I grew up in and still live in Asheboro. Don't go there. People from Asheboro aspire to escape the town. No one wants in. You would think that small towns are quaint, cozy, etc. But no. There is nothing to do in Asheboro.

I live in Farmer, NC which is 9 miles outside of Asheboro.
Don't come. As mentioned before no where to meet people if you didn't go to school here, no booze, and WalMart is the central hub of the general population.

Asheboro has become sort of a commuter town with a lot of folks trying to escape greensboro, charlotte and raleigh to raise kids and have a calmer lifestyle.

all i can pretty much say is the same things that were already mentioned

if you aren't one to go out to bars and such and are interested in the zoo, there are some nice neighborhoods on zoo pkwy which are secluded from the rest of the town

basically in asheboro, you want to pick your neighborhood carefully. There are a lot of shady ones there

Oh yeah sorry. That was the whole point of the meeting. It was at the China Center in RTP. They are adding the Asian continent, which is gonna be "huge" - obviously. But Dr. Jones went to China to get pandas, etc. Sounds pretty exciting to help out with. They said their next step is to get support from the local government.

Carrboro is a much better boro. Lots of music and art. Between sharing a downtown with a college town like Chapel Hill & being close enough to durham & RDU for amtrak & airport access, its where I'll be living for atleast the next 6 years. Also there are some jobs here atleast in my experience since I got one here right after college. And since UNC is the oldest public university open to students in the nation, it has a fairly well educated population & a general focus on education/good local schools.

Doesn't have a zoo or walmart though.

This thread was brutal. I'm not from Asheboro, but isn't there anyone that enjoys a slow-paced rural setting?

One thing I will say about Asheboro, it has a higher density of new and used automotive dealerships (primarily on US 64) than any other place I've ever seen.
