Specifically, photography classes.

Where could I go if I wanted some proper training in how to set up photos? I like to think I do OK using just my eyeball and my P&S digital, but I'd like some education.

A cursory glance through Wake Tech's catalog indicates that they don't have anything for me, but I may not be looking in the right parts of the catalog; and NCSU's photography classes are restricted to design majors only.

you might try talking to your advisor or department head. they might be able to pull some strings and get you in a photog class.

Meredith has awesome Photography classes, and there are a part of the inter-institution program.

have you taken pictures before or is this one of those things you want to pick up?


If you have taken pictures, the first day of class, go to the professor who is teaching photograpy and ask him, is there room to take this class, I really want it. If there is and you want it bad enough, he'll let you in. I think its Charles Joyner that teaches it. I was in ID so I don't remember what the ADN teachers teach.


If that doesn't work out for you, I think the NCSU Craft Center or the Pullen Arts Center has some non-credit classes.

i got a certificate in documentary studies, specifcally documentary photography through Duke's Center For Documentary Studies -- 18 hours of credit, but you don't have to go all the way of course.. i took the classes through the inter-institutional program, and managed to get NCSU credit that applied towards my GER courses in my EE degree audit. some of the classes also met at UNC, and were co-taught by fine art photographers based in the UNC art school.

duke CDS has absolutely AMAZING professors and instructors.

Photography classes here are limited to "basic" and "intermediate"

^^ yes, any NCSU student can take it. They aren't allowed to discriminate against guys if they are participating in the inter-institutional program

the classes at the craft center are mediocre at best. it's basic darkroom, composition, and how the camera works. the better use of the craft center is to pay the fee so that you can use the darkroom whenever you like.

or...lie and get on the design school list to use the brooks hall darkroom whenever you want. not that i would know anything about that, at all.

all of this is assuming that you shoot film, of course.

Neg, digital. I want classes focusing on composition and such, not so much basic mechanics like aperture vs. speed and all that stuff (which I pretty much figured out on my own, unless I'm missing something obvious).

well, duke/unc offer studio photography digital art courses. the closest thing on campus is joyner will be teaching a grad seminar in digital photography next semester, could always ask if you could sit in on it.
