So, I'm moving into a new house in Durham and need to hook up some cable and internet and was hoping to get some input. I was first thinking about just getting a bundle with Time Warner Cable that would give me standard cable and high-speed internet and the cost would be a little over $100. I have noticed after some research though that I can get DirecTV for around $40 a month and actually get more channels, and then get Earthlink internet which is supposedly the same speed as Roadrunner for $40 a month and save myself about $25 a month at least. Any thoughts? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.
Also, I can get a DSL connection for a lot less then cable, but how much slower would it be? I could save at last $15 per month but my download speed would go from 5mbps to 3mbps.... but I really don't have a good idea of how big a difference that is. I've been living on campus for the past 4 years so whatever they have is what I'm use too... I'm pretty sure anything will be a downgrade.

generally earthlink internet connection speeds are never near time warners. Both "claim" they get certain speeds but in actuality neither come close but Time warner tends to spank Earthlink. That's from experience of 3 seperate homes with earthlink.
One is in 27606 (Raleigh), one in 27703 (durham), and one in garner. The difference was pretty noticiable according to the webtest I ran (http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/).
It depends on what your preferences are for TV etc. DirectTV does offer more channels but are they channels you'll WATCH?!? 11/15/2006 10:34:39 AM |

thanks for the info.... as for the cable channels, no i probably won't watch any of the addtional channels DirecTV offers (in actuality I only watch about 3 chanels, ESPN, Comedy Central, and Local Channels for sports coverage) but you can't just buy those channels from anybody. I just found it interesting that DirecTV offers more channels for about $40 per month less then TWC. 11/15/2006 10:37:04 AM |
