I'm living in Japan and considering buying a Wii, but only if I can bring it back to the states and play games. I've tried google, I've tried nintendo, no one seems to have an answer. Does anybody know?

I found out the answer for the 360...it works, but you can't play US games. How stupid.

I'm pretty sure the Wii is NOT region free like the DS, but the rumor went back and forth so many times that I can't remember, honestly.

It's definitely region locked. American games wouldn't play nice on the Jap. Wii

at first there were rumors that it was region free, but it's been proven that it's quite the opposite

hit up http://www.joystiq.com and search for "wii region"

It's regional, nintendo is always big about that.

People that I know in the military that were stationed in Japan would just buy the American region versions of everything. That way the stuff would work for them when they came home. From what I understand region 1 material was readily available on store shelves near military bases but I'm sure you could just buy from amazon and just have it shipped.

When I lived in Japan, a lot of my friends brought back Japanese consoles because many of their favorite games weren't brought to America. An alternative is to wait for a Wii Action Reply to come out and just use that to get past the region protection...

although, since Wii is backwards compatible with Gamecube, you might be able to use the old Action Replay.
