i have a d-link wireless router (which i got on rebate for $5) and i've had no problem with it...but at the farthest point in the house, the signal is pretty weak...buy.com has this d-link 7dbi omni-directional antenna for $5 (after rebate, google checkout discount, and free shipping)

does anyone have any experience with additional antennas? do they actually work, or is it on sale precisely because they DON'T work? yes, i realize d-link isn't the most impressive brand, but it's been serving my needs pretty well, especially for the money

what usually happens is that the signal where you get it now is better, but the range really doesnt increase
but for 5 bucks try it out and see 11/16/2006 12:11:28 PM |

so if i'm getting 5.5mbps at the far point (on a 54mbps router), i could be up to, say, 24 or 36mbps? that's really all that i'm looking for, not really for a farther range 11/16/2006 12:13:57 PM |

i was looking for one to get farther range and all the reviews (yes i know they are anecdotal) said that they didnt get an increase in range but the signal in the areas where they got reception was better
its just 5 bucks, try it and see 11/16/2006 12:18:06 PM |

i set one up once (think it was actually the same one) and it didn't really increase the range much...but it sounds like youre not interested in that anyway.
for your purposes it sounds perfect 11/16/2006 12:29:48 PM |

a friend of mine in wolfvillage got tired of having 800+ms latency in every game so he had me cook up a solution for him. he lives down the hall from a study lounge with nomad, that is infinitely better. unfortunately the signal would not reach his apartment. so, I got a big omni directional antenna like that one and put it on the receiving side of a wrt54g and flashed it with dd-wrt. much less signal noise, probably saw a 30-40% stronger signal. now he plugs into the wrt54g (bridge/client mode) and connects through nomad and sees 100-200ms latency and increased bandwidth.
cliffs notes: yes, they do work 11/16/2006 1:05:36 PM |

actually, i have a wrt54g running dd-wrt at the moment...the connector's not the same, though, right? doesn't linksys have a larger/different one than most other manufacturers? 11/16/2006 2:03:03 PM |

got it in the mail today...silly thing has MAGNETS on the bottom...i desperately want to mount it to my refrigerator, just because
anywho, are the antennas on a wrt54g specifically sending/receiving, or does each antenna operate as both?
EDIT: nevermind, dd-wrt let's me set each individually, i just need to do it

it does what i want...at the farthest point, i've got a very good signal (36mbps) where before i had poor (5.5mbps)
well worth $5...i put it on the sending antenna...i haven't had any problems with it, but i'm thinking about buying a second one (different address and credit card for the rebate ) and putting it on the receiving antenna 11/22/2006 11:15:03 AM |
