Okay I so just drove 675 miles from NYC to my parents house in Charlotte, and when I pulled up my dad's like "whats hanging off the front of your car?" So I took a look, and part of my inner fender lining was torn away. But the real problem wasn't that. I have an AEM CAI and that is where my filter is...except, my filter is GONE. I just drove for 11 hrs, mostly in the rain and I didn't hear anything rip off my car or fall off. I imagine that if it fell off early in my trip, I could have significantly hurt the life of my engine (currently at 257k miles), if it was close to the end of my trip, not so much.

Anyway, do you guys have any suggestions on how I can get a replacement filter? It was a K&N cone filter, not a stock Integra item. My parents tossed the OEM intake long ago, so I can't strap that back on. Would an Autozone or Advanced have a cone filter that would match up with my intake pipe?

I can't imagine driving back to NYC without a FILTER on my engine!

Please help!

go to autozone and pickup a cheapo filter.

that happened to my celica once.

if your trying to make ur 257k engine last longer dont run a cai in the first place!

auto zone/advance usually cary k&n.. probably have a cone filter somewhere in the store...

just make sure you know the diameter of the pipe you're fitting it on.. and get a clamp (obviously)

if you're worried about engine damage, throw a compression tester on there.. and i would change the oil before the drive home.

i had that happen to mine once also. fortunately, my splash shields were still in place and the filter was just sitting there hangin' out taking a fucking break, i guess. i never had that issue with the first aem w/ the air horn (that's old school there. unfortunately, they don't make 'em anymore). like ^he said, just go to a parts house and buy a cheap apc filter to get you home. just measure your pipe first.

don't worry, running a k&n is hardly better than no filter at all.

try getting in touch with Tuite (nick) while you're down there, his step brother is pretty heavy into imports (mostly honda/acura) and may have something you can get if you don't find anything at the parts places. pm me if you want his cell.

So I'm having a bitch of a time finding a replacement filter, even something just temporary to fit the bill until I'm back in NY. I can order a direct replacement off the internet, but that won't arrive in time (tomorrow at 12pm).

Hypothetically speaking, how bad would it be on my engine to drive another 700 miles without an air filter on it?

As a last resort, if none of the import places around Charlotte have a replacement, I'm gonna find some cheapo cone filter and duct tape the hell out of it.

I wouldn't worry about changing the oil. Also, a cheap cone filter that fits +copius amounts of duct tape will be just fine.

On top that, I wouldn't think about this incident unless you have a reason to at some distant point in the future.

or cram a car wash sponge up in there. it won't make it past the t.b. if it goes up that far.

Thanks fellas.

I picked up a short ram intake this morning and threw it on.

Also, upon closer inspection, my fender lining was definitely cut with a sharp object (knife i'd bet). So yeah, some sorry ass loser up in NYC stole my 5 year old K&N cone filter. Wow.

Now its off to Raleigh for the ECU game!

How about "b/c its not a drop in OEM replacement filter"...which was pretty obvious from my first post.

Now the car's at the shop for new tie-rods and upper control arms. Damn.....

God yes I have. Bought it 7 1/2 yrs ago for $6500. Since then I've put over 120k miles on it including autoxing, road courses, and drag racing and haven't paid that much in maintenance. This car is indestructible.

My bro had a 93 Shit brown teg with 100k, he just got it stolen out of his parking garage this thanksgiving holiday in Seattle... And it wasn't in the best of condition.

Prolly being parted out or used in some heist or so...

^^yeah, there are a good stretch where that car was either auto-Xd or run at Rockingham at least once per month, and sometimes more.

I have a great condition s2k OEM filter (less then 2k miles on it) you can have. With some engineering thought and a few home depot stops you should be able to get it on there.

HAHAHA, thanks Brian for reviving this for me. Sorry I didn't post in it yet but its been a busy weekend with homecoming and the parents visiting.

So what I did to solve the problem was just buy a cheap short ram intake in the meantime. Well that short ram intake (in true POS fashion) has been failing me. It slips off the intake manifold occasionally, and now the filter itself has broken in that I have to keep it held together with rubber bands. I still have the AEM CAI and since I just moved back to NC figure its time to hook that back up. I inquired with AEM about ordering a replacement filter in the right size and this is what I got in an email from them:

Quote :
"Currently it uses AEM filter part # 21-202DK , 2.75” opening with 1 ½” neck. Earlier kits might have used a longer neck approx 3”. If this is what you had we no longer carry this type. I would suggest extending the pipe with an aluminum pip and coupler to make up for the shorter neck."

I also called him and spoke with him on the phone and other than the above he suggested just going to a speed shop to get (or order) a filter that fits. What shop would you guys suggest, the only one that comes to my mind is Phantasm Finding a filter seems easier than finding/fabricating an aluminum tube extension.

last time i did that i could not find one that fit. I don't want a POS filter either. Having one filter fall apart is enough.

I couldnt see that the spectre filter is fundamentally any different from the K&N, except one uses grey gauze and red oil and one uses red guaze and clear oil.

Why havent you picked up a phone and called K&N Pat? You know exactly what you need, I am sure they make one that will work, call them and get a part number.

I need to take a tape measure to the intake tubing after work, as well as measure 1-2 clearances in the engine bay/wheel well.
