I'm not from ITD, but in general, the university renews contracts (yearly??) for any software they sell or license to students. This includes Symantec Antivirus. They will DEFINITELY find a way to get appropriate antivirus software out to students for Vista ... they really don't want every new machine that comes on campus to be infested with stuff because of silly things like contract issues. 11/29/2006 3:49:34 AM |

i assume that symantec version 10 will be compatible. if that's the case, yes, we'll have it. 11/29/2006 10:20:30 AM |

Hi folks:
In short, yes, we will support versions of Windows that are supported by Symantec. They have some test versions of SAV 10 that work okay with Windows Vista, and we're testing them now.
Please stay tuned to our antivirus website for details and availability:
http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus
If you have any additional questions, please PM me, or e-mail me at ed_lee@ncsu.edu. Thanks! 11/30/2006 3:41:32 PM |

SAV 10.2 will support Vista. It hasn't been released yet, but is expected soon. For more info, see http://www.symantec.com/vista/sav-vista.html. 12/2/2006 12:20:44 AM |

And just to be clear, you'll download this directly from ITD, not from Symantec. Again, let me know if you have any questions. 12/2/2006 7:33:10 AM |

bttt. For those interested, we'll be releasing SAV 10.2 for Windows Vista on Wednesday, after 12:00 pm.
Check our website (http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus) for details at that time. Complete instructions for Windows Vista will be available, and I highly encourage folks to read them carefully before installing. There are a couple of potential gotchas that you will need to know about.
Let me know if you have any questions. 1/22/2007 7:26:24 PM |

It's not been listed prominently because we've had some ongoing concerns about it's memory usage. We've also seen some of our peer institutions (such as UNC) have had some security problems with older versions of SAV 10.
Rather than put students and staff at risk, we felt it'd be more prudent to wait until Symantec had the chance to iron out some of the problems with their product.
We're more comfortable with more recent releases of SAV 10, so we're starting to encourage it's general use.
When it comes to desktop security, we'd rather be a little cautious and sure-footed. Thanks. 1/23/2007 2:00:59 PM |

Well, just to be clear, 10.2 will currently only work with Windows Vista. Symantec hasn't released 10.2 for any other versions of Windows thus far. 1/23/2007 2:21:30 PM |
