Sad I feel the need to do this. Lets give credit where credit is due...
Herb Sendek deserves the respect and admiration of any true Wolfpack fan. He inherited a team stained with negative press, subpar recruiting, and had to somehow deal with the likes of Dean Smith and Coach K in our two biggest rivals. This was a monster undertaking.
And what did Herb do? He brought class and respectability to the program. Gone were the behavioral problems and negative press. Herb raised the bar in 2001 by bringing in a great recruiting class and sending the Pack back to the NCAA tournament. From 2001-2006 the pack had a winning record in the ACC four out of five seasons. He earned 2004 Coach of the Year honors. He recruited 2003-2004 ACC player of the Year and 20th overall pick of the 2005 NBA Draft pick Julius Hodge.
Herb did what he was brought in to do. He turned a floundering program around. He reestablished NC State as a force in the ACC. The fact that Herb was treated so poorly is a real shame. When he stepped aside and took another job, fans should have lined up to shake his hand. Yeah, he didn't quite get the Pack back to the top, but he certainly got us pointed in the right direction.
What I wish Pack fans would do is simply admit that Herb did a GOOD JOB. He didn't do a great job, but he got the Pack back where it needed to be, and he did it right way. No shady shit or ego-driven basket cases for players. This is how I will remember him and it is the way everyone should remember him.
I thank and respect Herb for what he did, not what he didn't do. That is all. 11/29/2006 12:10:01 AM |

This wouldn't been necessary if people didn't keep bringing it up. The fact the so few have even moderately appreciated Sendek's work is what gives State fans a bad rap in the 1st place.
I said my piece. Agree or disagree, but yeah it needed to be said again given the bullshit I've been reading here lately. 11/29/2006 12:56:07 AM |

I don't get why it's so right to have a thread respecting Amato, but a thread respecting Sendek gets trashed. We can't have a basketball thread without some moron jumping in and going "YEAH! FUCK HERB!". I mean, why do we need to have this shit?:

Get over it. Forget about him.
There should be respect for both or respect for neither. I hope you all that can't talk positive about Sid without bringing up Herb plan on doing the same for Amato next football season.

I'd like to thank him for recruiting all the players on our team right now.
Grant's awesome, so is Fells and Costner. Not too many people were excited about McCauley when he came in, but as you can see, he's going to be SOLID.
Thanks for not leaving the cupboard bare Herb. 11/29/2006 9:10:35 AM |

I agree 100% with this thread.
always have. He was twice the coach Amato ever was. and the expectations of him wedged between UNC and Duke were his biggest downfall. State fans have always been ridiculous.
Again, good thread...even though, I've said this for god knows how long. 11/29/2006 9:50:22 AM |

I think that is honestly why most of these clowns love Sid so much. Most of these people groaned when he was announced as coach because they wanted barnes or calipari and now they are justifying their love for him simply because he is the absolute antithesis of Herb in just about every coaching way.
I love Sid and Herb being gone as much as the next guy, but the continual Herb bashing in these threads is getting old.11/29/2006 10:19:32 AM |

That is very true. It is annoying. I think it's unfair to Sidney Lowe to compare him to previous coaches who have had success, whether it be Case, Sloan, Valvano, OR Sendek (no I'm not putting him up their on the previous 3s level fools). Every basketball win there is a 'well we would have lost that with the old coach' or 'FUCK HERB!' comment every 3 damn posts in the threads -- well, damn I remember winning a lot of games the past 5 years so we didn't lose all of them like some people are making out..
^ I do think you're being a bit unfair to Lowe though unless I'm misunderstanding... He was the 5th choice or whatever but I think that we actually ended up for the best the others turned them job down. We were going after the 'big splash' when what we really should have been looking for was exactly what we got. Just my opinion...

I agree with that. I can honestly say that I didn't want Barnes. Herb is on the same level as Barnes. He is so overrated. Calipari is dirty, etc. We got what we needed, a long term solution. This will probably be Sid's last gig and he will bust his ass for NCSU.11/29/2006 4:17:02 PM |

Since my other thread was locked up, I'm trying to find one where we can have a decent conversation about Sendek since he coaches my alma mater. This one seems okay. I will have to say I'm quite disappointed in our team this year, and last year wasn't terribly different. The only real issue is that I'm not sure who would want to coach at ASU for basketball with the issues ncstatetke has pointed out and my concurring for the most part. I guess we're just not meant to have a good squad that can consistently beat the Wildcats. What do you all think? 1/26/2015 6:56:30 PM |

ASU is becoming a juco destination. 6 of the players getting significant minutes this season are transfers. Herb needs to recruit high school players better. Having that said, Herb does have commits from the #25 PG and #16 SF for next year's class, the #17 SF for the 2016 class, and the #10 PG for the 2017 class
Maybe when Harden wins the MVP this year, Herb can pimp that to his advantage 1/26/2015 10:27:00 PM |

ASU is 40-7 at home over the past 3 seasons including 15-5 in conference play
should have beat OSU in Corvalis a few weeks ago, just too many turnovers and sloppy fouls
these teams are very evenly matched. I'd say ASU - 62 OSU - 57 1/26/2015 11:26:45 PM |
