As a school we must remember the man and pursue the cause but also as a human race we must also pursue the cure to the threat of life known as cancer. My father has overcome the disease and Im sure you know someone that has had it, has it or has beat it.
Don't give up...don't ever give up.

Actually what he did really wasnt out of the ordinary.
in the 1970's is when we really screwed up more to tell the truth.
All of the allegations against Valvano in the book that brought about the whole fiasco 'personal fouls' were false.
The investigation found out that the only thing the kids did was sell their complimentary tickets and their shoes after they used them. Really not that big of a deal considering some of the stories of things that kids are doing these days.
If not for Dean Smith as an assistant at UNC covering his boss's ass UNC would have been in much the same trouble.
there was a quote by the CHIEF investigator that said "I consider myself a good judge of character and I have come to the belief that you are one of the best people I have ever met in intercollegiate athletics and one of the best people I have met, period. What all this leads up to is youre good for intercollegiate athletics, good for NC State and good for the NCAA. I hope you stay at State and continue to do as you have always done and not change anything about your methods or personality. If I had a son, I would feel comfortable with you as his coach."
so in reality Peter Golenbock ruined NC State. 12/5/2006 7:30:03 PM |

I want to see what the fuss is with Paul Harris. He is supposedly the 'savior' to Syracuse fans but I haven't seen him yet.. hopefully traffic is light so I can get home from work before it's over..

Very true but Jimmy Valvano himself admitted that he could have and should have done a better job policing the program and judging character in his players. He was stretched too thin being coach AND AD, which was an adminstrative mistake more than anything else..

oh is that why he wasnt at the golf tournament? i thought he just decided not to go :coach:
maybe you should realize that just winning championships does not make a program or a coach, in order to establish a solid foundation for a program you have to do it the right way, in the long run we were fucked 12/5/2006 7:47:19 PM |

rightttttt because he was consecutively in the top of the ACC and the tournament.
I dont know who you think you are talking about man, for real you look like an idiot right now because you are spitting off 'this is what i think is right' shit out of your mouth.
Look at the records, the recruiting, the stats, the situation. Do some reading, figure out why it happened and then get back to us...until then stop thinking you know everything about the situation.
we were Fucked due to Coach K's arrival, Dean Smith and an ACC that was stacked.

if he did it the right way why has there been nothing but a downward spiral for the last 15 years?
even worse he succeded in fucking away what everett case did for the school. he pretty much rode the waves from what was already around, was a good coach so he got alot of support, then when his shit got questioned it all fell apart

obviously you forget the atrocious Les Robinson.
obviously you didnt realize how well Duke and UNC would do in the next few years.
Obviously you forget that the N&O which broke most of the false stories were UNC journalism grads that admitted they liked making State look bad, falsely presenting accounts or not.
Obviously you even forgot Norm Sloan between the Case-V years.
Obviously you did not realize that Dean Smith, Coach K, everyone on Tobacco Road supported and FEARED Jimmy V as a coach.
Obviously you forget his 209-114 record(not too bad aye?)
Obviously you forgot the restrictions imposed on us that limited us throughout the 90's when V had already resigned.
Obviously you forgot how LOW academic standards were until this investigation all around the ACC.
Obviously you dont know much about what you are talking about so stfu.

then what the hell are you arguing? that his 'dirty work' as a coach destroyed NC State?
I already rebutted that with quotes from the CHIEF INVESTIGATORS!!!
All things that came about were never proven...he did NOTHING TO BRING DOWN THIS PROGRAM.

Why are you bringing this shit into this thread?? This thread is about the Jimmy V Classic, supporting cancer research, and the inspiration that is the man, Jim Valvano.
So please shut the fuck up and get the fuck out of this thread.
Putting aside his fallacies as an AD and coach at our school, Jim Valvano was a great man and an inspiration to many people. I still can't watch his ESPY/Reynold's speech without crying, and it takes a lot to make me cry. The man could speak. 12/5/2006 8:08:31 PM |

Dear Jim,
Please excuse the handwriting but I want this to be personal and not something off a typewriter or a computer. If you have trouble reading this, I apologize, but it is the best I can do. I am writing because I have become very fond of you throughout the course of the investigation. I guess we are not good friends, but as friendly as we can become through meeting under these circumstances. When I was first assigned this case I had no idea what you were all about. I had some knowledge of you from your TV appearances and I suspected I might encounter some smart-@#%$ egomaniac who would try to @#%$ me.
Those impressions vanished after I met you and spent some time around you just listening to your philosophy about basketball, academics, life and other things we touched on. I consider myself a fairly good judge of character after the experiences I have had here, and I have come to believe that you are one of the best people I have met in intercollegiate athletics and one of the best people I have met period.
I do not know the pressures you operate under, I do not know how your family has been affected by these proceedings, I guess I can’t know how you feel about your status at N.C. State because I don’t walk in your shoes and finally, I know you are not stupid or crazy and will make decisions based on your good judgement. Anyway, what all this leads up to is what I told you before in your office: you’re good for intercollegiate athletics, good for N.C. State and good for the NCAA. I hope you stay at N.C. State and continue to do as you’ve always done and not change anything about your methods or your personality. If I had a son, I would feel comfortable with you as his coach and encourage him to learn from you. So, anyway, for what it’s worth, if you are thinking about leaving N.C. State, please make that decision based on sound reasons (I know you will) and not because of some outside influence or a whim. I've grown to like you and respect you very much. I cannot say that about many people I have encountered in this job. If you decide to leave N.C. State, I know it will be because it is the best decision for you and your family -but it will be a big loss for the university, the ACC, the NCAA and the City of Raleigh. If I can support or help in any way, I will.
You have a lot of supporters and admirers nationwide. I hope you get some comfort from them. Please hang in there as best you can.
Best personal regards,
Dave Didion

that really tore me up last year, especially when he mentions the part in his speech about how the v foundation and cancer research can't save him but might save his children...
