From here until OBrien retires we will always win 7-9 games every single season. Never more, never less. We will go to whothefuckcares.com bowl and play some shit team that we will spank. Rinse and repeat.
I was a big PJ fan, and maybe he would have never been as good as Obrien, but at least he had some potential and could have given the fanbase some hope. 12/6/2006 9:25:49 PM |

I'm going to find you a list of Boston College's recruiting rankings over his tenure there and then you tell me whether or not he's hit his peak as a head coach. Thats the dumbest god damn thing I've ever heard....basically because you're saying you're not satisfied with a fucking bowl game every year. We're 3-9 right now dipshit. Boston College has so many recruiting disadvantages that its sick. Nobody fucking cares about their football program and they're 9-3 for the 3rd straight year and headed to their 8th straight bowl game.

jesus you act like we're alabama (or this is basketball). we have no reason to be upset with 7-9 wins every year. if he gets us that for 10 solid years, then we can potentially move up to someone better, but we're not going to become a national power in football in the blink of an eye, considering right now we're sitting 3-9, 0-3 against cusa/mac. 12/6/2006 9:37:43 PM |

can't agree more with this
He'll consistently keep us in the Top 25
But nobody will EVER talk about us because they know we can never win big. We'll always get "so-so" bowl games, and there's no chance in the WORLD we ever have a 1-2 loss season. It'll be 3-5 every year, just like BC has done.

look, if he takes a crappy program and makes it into a borderline top 25 program, he'll have done the same as herb, which is fine with me as long as the next coach can take us the rest of the way

Here at NC State University we could quite possibly have the most unknowledgeable football fans in this country. Anyone who thinks that PJ was the best pick for this job is a fucking fool. What kind of experience does he have in a fucking BCS conference? PJ's experience includes time at Avery County High School, Lees-McRae College, Hawaii, Georgia Southern and now Navy. Its amazing that after looking at what TOB has done with some of the shittiest recruiting classes in the ACC, that some you fucking oblivious idiots still think that PJ who has never even coached or recruited in a BCS conference. You are all fucking idiots if you think that PJ was the better pick. The majority of the fan base want a coach that is a proven winner and you dumbasses would rather take a guy with no experience in high level competition instead of a guy who has already proven that he can win in a big time conference 12/6/2006 10:37:01 PM |

you all are being pretty harsh... if you look at the coaches available and our situation, this is really a pretty solid hire
1. O'Brien is a coach whereas Chuck was a personality. We have facilities and now a coach who can utilize the talent they bring in.
2. O'Brien seems to understand that you can't just recruit running backs, d-linemen and wide receivers. I've always been impressed by BC's offensive line and its ability to run the ball.
3. For all of you who are saying we're going to be the exact program BC has been... i.e. unable to win the big games... that's ridiculous. you all seem to like comparisons, what if unc basketball had said, "we don't want roy williams, he always loses in the final four." there is no certainty. it goes both ways of course, walt harris did a great job at pitt and then sucked it up at stanford. don't prejudge and assume we're going to be just like BC.
4. For the most part, O'Brien has shown that he can win playing in a BCS conference. He has a damn good track record of winning. Who knows what he can do with the facilities we have, the fan support that is just waiting to back a solid program, etc. Give the guy a shot. 12/7/2006 12:16:05 AM |

this does seem very herbesque if you ask me
read bc's boards and you will find posts eerily similiar to what was being said when asu hired herb away

Quote : | "My #1 criteria is that we go and get a guy who will bring a little fire to this BC team. Someone who can pump up the team, earn their respect, and be aggressive. TOB did a decent job of getting the BC program to a respectful level. But where was the spark? The excitement? That's one thing a good head coach can, and should, bring to his team. " |
very much a "he recovered us from the post-scandal days of the 90's and brought us back up to a top 25 team but couldnt get us over the hump" kind of mood. they treat the 7 straight bowl wins much like we treated the 5 straight ncaa tourney appearances. good but not good enough. and we use that as justification of how good he is, much like the asu posters were doing with herbs tourney record. only difference is that at least herb had some supporters, just from reading their threads i have seen maybe one or two posts in support of him. i just dont think its a good sign when a head coach leaving a school is met with cheers. we'll just have to see i guess.

Man...... you can't deny the similarities between what happened with Herb here and what is happening with O'Brien at BC. Man karma is killer. However, because I personally want to see TOB (and by extension NC State) do well, I'm going to offer 2 key counterpoints.
1) Tobacco road is basketball country. The standards for us in football are not the same for us in basketball. In basketball, it is sometimes unrealistically either Sweet 16 or higher every year or bust. In football, 8-9 wins a year and a good bowl are enough to make us happy, always has been and you know with our fan base, we are going to go to a good bowl if we at least get some wins.
2) Roy and K. You can't deny that Herb was under unfair expectations because of those two. We were successful with him here but with those two down the road racking up National championships and Final Four, what a guy to do. Sure UNC got Davis and Wake's Grobe is doing well now. However, who knows how long Davis will stay at UNC and whether or not Grobe is going to leave Wake and how successful they will really be. O'Brien could have a hard time because of those two but it will never be the same as Herb had it with Roy and K.
With that being said, We are not a powerhouse football college and though we like to pretend we are at times, everyone knows we are not. The FSU, Notre Dame and Texas fan bases are shooting for a BCS championship every year. Our fan base will probably be happy as long as we are keep playing as close to or on New Year's as possible. We got a proven coach who can win in the ACC and hopefully our deeper resources and facilities will help him get that 10-11 win season he wants. So instead of comparing him to a coach we ran out, let past die (hasn't Herb suffered enough) and support O'Brien to fullest.
