now is the perfect time to take a huge step up. o'brien is a solid, but medicore hire. as i said, we had BETTER coaches who said they WANTED to coach here.
all-time versus temple, rutgers, uconn, i-aa schools, and any non-bcs program other than byu or boise state: 38 wins 5 losses
all-time versus all other schools: 37 wins 39 losses
all-time against the ap top 25: 7 wins 21 losses
all-time against teams that finished the season in the ap top 25: 4 wins 22 losses
all-time against miami, virginia tech, and florida state: 3 win 15 losses
all-time conference titles (9 years at bc): 0 those stats were compiled by http://www.firetob.com]
other points:
- this is not only an inter-conference move, but an inter-division move. - bc fans are ecstatic. i wonder why? - out outgoing coach, chuck amato (3-9), beat o'brien this year. we won because instead of sealing the game with a short field goal, o'brien decided to try and convert on 4th and 3 with a fullback offtackle play. his fullback was just coming off a shouler injury, and reinjured the same shoulder earlier in the game. this blunder left 42 seconds on the gameclock, and he allowed us to drive the field for a game winning touchdown. - a couple of years ago, bc could've gotten a bcs bowl bid (a first for o'brien) by simply beating syracuse, a horrible football team. bc and o'brien choked. - those are examples of what bc fans have dubbed "wtf games". he has a couple of these every year. - butch davis, unc's new head coach, is 4-0 versuse tom o'brien. unc is our biggest rival, and losing to them has been a primary factor for the firing of our previous two coaches. - o'brien has no recruiting ties in north carolina nor the southeast. now, he is expected to compete with 4 other division 1a schools in the state, 3 of which are our near neighbors. he'll be hitting the recruiting trails against unc's butch davis, an experienced recruiter of the area; jim grobe, who's wake forest team just won the conference title; philip fulmer (tenn.); steve spurrier (south car.); tommy bowden (clemson); bobby bowden (fsu); mark richt (georgia); and miami's new coach. - his lack of charisma and stoic personality isn't going to help him much on the recruiting trails. not saying the guy needs to be boistrious, but he is a saltine cracker. - o'brien's disciplinarian rep is vastly overrated. he has routinely given out lax punishments. a 1 game suspension for a captain who punched an opponent is an example. bc fans have complained about this even before news broke about o'brien being hired by nc state. - he had a VERY poor relationship with his previous athletic director and bc alumni. if he can't develop and maintain a good relationship at a school's football priorities fall behind hockey and lacrosse, things don't bode well for him at nc state. our athletic director calls a faction of the fanbase "the lunatic fringe". as messed up as that is, he's somewhat right. o'brien will get torn apart by the fans, alumni, boosters, and media down here. - o'brien has been pimping himself out for years now, and got publicly rejected by schools such as unc, washingtion, and arizona state. the guy's been trying to jump ship for awhile now, but had no where to go. now he is essentially doing it in-house. we're taking a multiple time reject over guys many schools want, and guys highly respected as up-and-coming superstar head coaches. - this hire creates a MAJOR rift in our fanbase... again. - we've been interviewing candidates for two weeks, but ended up hiring a guy we talked with for less than a day.
i'm still livid about the prospect of tom o'brien being our next head coach. i haven't felt this ill about anything in several years.

I can see it now, today on PTI
"Moving on to our next topic Tony, it seems that our good friends at the internet message board The Wolf Web are at it again, and this time they're going after new NC State head coach Tom O'Brien, blasting him relentlessly even before the official announcement that he was hired. More than two dozen threads have been made since the news leaked, the vast majority of them negative."12/7/2006 12:47:35 PM |

Quote : | " With a record of 66-42, O'Brien is just two wins shy of the school record for most wins by a head coach (Joe Yukica, 68). He became BC's 32nd head football coach in December of 1996 and has since engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in recent college football history by building a program that:
-Won the American Football Coaches' Association's 2004 Academic Achievement Award with a 100% graduation rate and received Honorable Mention status seven additional times during his tenure.
-Was ranked number one in the country by USA Today when the paper re-ordered the final 2005 football Top 25 by APR (Academic Progress Rate) score to measure a combination of athletic and academic success.
-Has won nine games for the third time in four years; eight or more games for the fifth year in a row and sixth time in seven years; and seven or more games for a school-record seventh year in a row.
-Finished 5-3 in their first year in the Atlantic Coast Conference, tying eventual champion Florida State for first place in the league's Atlantic Division.
-Went to a school-record seventh consecutive bowl game and won its sixth in a row (27-21 over Boise State in the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl), the longest active bowl game winning streak in the country.
O'Brien's 2005 BC team was the first since 1984 to be ranked in the top 25 in at least one of the two major polls from start to finish. The team finished 17th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, its highest finish in that poll since 1993 (12th). It finished 18th in the final Associated Press poll, its highest finish in that poll 1993 (13th). The Eagles finished 12th in the final Sagarin rankings, which take into account win/loss record and strength of schedule. According to the rankings, the Eagles played the 22nd-most-difficult schedule in the country in 2005. Only Virginia Tech (5th) finished higher in the Sagarin rankings among ACC teams. " |
