its supposed to encrypt data between hdcp authorized devices. So like the HDCP dudes hand out ids and keys or someshit to each manufacturer. Only devices with legit keys can encrypt and decrypt the video and audio data. In order to get a key, the manufacturers have to promise to enforce the encryption for copyrighted shit.

But you can already buy "converters". They support incoming HDCP and just decrypt it so you can do what you want with the data.
