i use ^. it's nice for ripping whole DVDs, and you can do a lot of the stuff dvdshrink can do like pull out specific titles, drop audio tracks and stuff, although the interface for doing all that is not very good and some of the options aren't as powerful.
for ripping to XviD, I use handbrake - http://handbrake.m0k.org/?page_id=24 generally, I rip a full disc using Mactheripper, then use Handbrake on that disc folder. You can use handbrake directly from the disc, but I think it's slower and keeps the DVD drive spinning for hours on end.
here's several other options, including FastDVDCopy (http://www.fastdvdcopy.com/en/products.php) which is the only program that can go end-to-end, ripping, compressing, and reburning, but it costs $100..... http://www.informit.com/guides/content.asp?g=mac&seqNum=74&rl=1 12/28/2006 11:06:26 AM |

follow up question: once you've ripped the DVD what program do you use to convert it to MPEG or AVI format?

jesus, read the frickin article i linked to twice. mactheripper, popcorn, fastdvdcopy and others will go from DVD > on-drive DVD, ready for DVD burning. mactheripper and handbrake and others will go from DVD > mpg, avi, etc 12/28/2006 4:25:30 PM |

I've just browsed through the ripper manual and it does not say anything about converting the Video TS or VOB files into mpegs and avi.

it doesn't appear to be documented very well, so I was a bit surprised when it did it the first time. If you do Full Disc Extraction it will do the whole VIDEO_TS thing, but if you go to Mode and select specific titles to extract, it will extract them as AVIs. Actually, IIRC, it will extract the video and audio separately as AVI and MPEG or something..... then you hvae to use a tool like FGMpegX to MUX them back together. All in all, it's a pain in the ass - i only use MacTheRipper to do full disc extraction.
To rip to AVIs or mpgegs using the DivX or FFmpeg codecs, use HandBrake. It's drop dead simple - you choose either a DVD disc or a Disc folder (like one created from mactheripper), then you select a file output format, a file encoder, either a target output size, average bitrate, or quality ratio, then and subtitles and audio tracks you want. You can create queues too create several files, e.g. for an episodic DVD, you can select all the titles on the disc and add them to a queue and rip them all overnight. 12/28/2006 6:26:11 PM |

After I use handbrake to compress my ripped file into an mpeg4 format, I tried to use iDVD to burn the rest of the movie. This way I lose my menus, and then I have to choose a theme etc. It get kind of annoying. Can you recommend anything better? Preferably something that s already installed with iLife. I've been considering this http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/ 1/2/2007 12:29:00 AM |
