An epileptic girl suffers a breakdown during her first year at university, then decides to seek help from a priest in battling the troubles associated with her strict upbringing.
Sound familiar? It should. It's based on the same events as The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The only difference, in fact, is that this movie is both A)realistic, and B)good. I honestly had no desire to see it, and considered just kind of watching it while I was doing something else. I'm really glad I watched it.
While Emily Rose was like OH NOES TEH DEBIL IS GONNA GITCHA, Requiem presents a realistic portrait of the pressures of school, a strict upbringing, and suffering from a serious mental disorder, and what can come about from having to deal with all three at once. It was hard to watch at times, but it was good, and very realistic if you've ever had to deal with a friend or family member with a debilitating mental illness. The girl's dad is played by Burghart Klaußner, who was great in The Edukators. Sandra Hüller is cute as a button.
The film takes place in Germany in the mid seventies, and it does a really good job of giving the feel of that time and place. It was shot on 16mm, so it has that nice grainy look of the film of the time. It has some kickass German classic rock, too, so if you ever wanted to rock out to some Zep, but wished it were in German, here's your chance.
It's got 88% on RottenTomatoes, and it comes with the official spöokyjon seal of approval.
Playing this week at Galaxy Cinema. Showtimes are 1:10 and 7:10 every day. Student tickets are $5.50. PBR is cheap as hell. Come see it!
