Weinke is a gonner...his contract is up and there is now way Bazenez(sp?) will be the backup so I expect they will bring in a FA or draft a #2 QB. 1/5/2007 8:15:38 AM |

was lefors really so much worse than weinke that he wasn't worth even putting on the practice squad?
or maybe he just refused the practice squad to try and find a roster spot elsewhere 1/5/2007 8:50:42 AM |

I'm pretty sure weinke signed an extention last offseason. Also, foxy has said many times that he does not believe in drafting a QB high in the draft (because he says they take too much development time to draft that high), so they'll probably draft a QB in the later rounds like they have the past few years if they draft one at all.
....Rucker will be gone fo sho., and probably Minter (or atleast delegated to a backup role), they'll be heavy in the market for safteys, LB's, and O linemen.....also they'll be on the look out for TE, RB and Receiver.....I wouldn't expect a big splash at QB though.

my friend used to be his next door neighbor in carolina...from what they were telling me he ended up having to compete with basanez for the 3rd qb spot and was kinda upset because he thought he got a raw deal by carolina after being drafted in the 3rd or 4th round i think just prior. Anyway, he got beat out by basanez and was cut...he now plays in the CFL in edmonton i believe
and weinke is signed on with an extension so he's not going anywhere

"The Carolina Panthers finalized a contract with new offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson on Tuesday night.
Davidson was the offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns the past two seasons. Prior to that, he was an assistant with New England as the Patriots won three Super Bowls.
Davidson, 39, replaces Dan Henning, who was fired after an 8-8 season. The team also officially announced tight ends coach Dave Magazu will shift to offensive line coach." http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/sports/football/nfl/carolina_panthers/16528002.htm
Yeah I wasn't too happy either when I heard about it, but after reading up on this guy a bit, I'm pretty excited. He was an assistant coach with the Patriots when they won 3 Superbowls, really likes the tight end, and is well liked and respected by other coaches and personnel throughout the league. And even if he doesn't work out, he can't be any worse than Henning...
for some more info on the guy: http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-31541.html 1/23/2007 9:21:11 PM |

^^In all respect, he didn't have SHIT to work with in Cleveland. Kellen Winslow... yay.
This guy worked under Charlie Weis for a while up in New England and Fox said that Weis personally endorsed this guy (Fox and him are good pals). So if he can bring a little Weis style offense to the Panthers, I say bring him on

supposedly he really likes using TE's as pass catchers (as opposed to pretty much an extra tackle like the panthers are notorious for), so look for us to try to get a pass catching TE in FA or the draft. 1/24/2007 12:10:35 PM |

^exactly what i was getting ready to post. Our TE's have been missing over the past seasons. Even when they are on the field they are almost a nonentity for catching the ball. I think this will be a good upgrade for us 1/24/2007 12:13:54 PM |

I doubt we will make in strong moves towards WR. Drew Carter...he is good and getting better, he is actually the fastest on the team, believe it or not. I hope Morgan is gone, i really do. Minter will retire pretty soon, he is gettin slow, and rucker wont be far behind. We need OL badly! and someone who can step up in the secondary, although richard marshal is looking good. Fox always drafts the most athletic guy out there, so i have faith in any of his picks. So far he has picked all winners...i think, dont quote me on that. 1/24/2007 2:32:01 PM |

^^rucker will be cut....he's due a big roster bonus in the spring.
If Key leaves, we will need to look at WR even if its late rounds of the draft
Morgan will be back, untill he bruises his brain halfway through the season, but the panthers will prepare for that this off season
the secondary situation depends on what happens with Lucas
I would say our needs at this moment are:
-OL
-LB
-Saftey (strong and free)
-TE
-WR/return man
-RB
-QB
from most need to least need, and we won't come close to filling all the holes in just one off-season.
