anyone else seen this? i bought the uber-edition dvd box on reputation alone, and i'm glad i did. this movie is fucking fantastic! it's also fucking crazy, especially at the end when shit is explained. i thought i had the twist figured out. i was right, but it wasn't the real twist. the big one was more fucked up than i had even considered.
general jist: a guy is kidnapped by an unknown person(s) after he got piss drunk and arrested. he is imprisoned for 15 years with no explanation as to why and who kidnapped him. during the span, he is tormented by his captures, and he suffers through peculiar acts (which is explained later in the movie). guy slowly grows mad, and vows revenge when/if he ever escapes/gets out. he is suddenly released one day with no explanation. his kidnapper(s) continue to fuck with him, and the guy realizes that he's just in a bigger cell. he is given 5 days to figure out who imprisoned him, but more importantly why he/they did it. if he doesn't, everyone that the guy loves for the rest of his life will be murdered. the movie progresses as the guy figures things out, and seeks his revenge.
the twist will make every one of you go, "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck..."
let me just say that it's the ULTIMATE OWNAGE. i mean, you'll never hear about a better one than this.
btw, this is a park chan wook movie. "old boy" is the second in his vengeance trilogy ("sympathy for mr. vengeance" and "sympathy for lady vengeance"). the film won the grand prix at the '04 cannes film festival.

i think my only big criticism of the movie is the superman, he's invincible fight sequence when the main character takes out like 30 gangsters. it was still a pretty badass, funny sequence though. 1/4/2007 6:43:56 PM |

eh... doesn't give away anything really, but i don't want anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet to get any kind of indication as to the twists.

i thought there were going to be more mind games after he got out because of the whole beginning part and the hypnosis stuff kinda a let down when it became just a revenge movie with a twists 1/5/2007 7:44:59 PM |

^^^ aha! whoever made "zinda" must've seen "oldboy".
^^ i don't care if you're super chuck norris, no one can take on 30 dudes at once. they don't even try to pull that shit in "walker: texas ranger". it just didn't seem to fit the style of the movie. everything else was very real and believable, which i think is a big part of what made the movie great. it was like, "oh shit, this could happen to me!" the take on 30 dudes by yourself shit is for action movies. like i said though, i still thought it was an entertaining fight sequence. also, the other fights weren't embellished like that one.
