Anybody ever taken them? How are they? Do they help at all with outdoor cycling?

Instructor led stationary cycling classes using special bikes...it's super high intensity and a great workout

haha I was thinking more of 'hold your arms out, look up, and spin around in a circle in an open field till you fall down' sort of class... sounds like much more fun anyway.

Probably not as good of a calorie burning exercise tho.. boo.

it really depends on the instructor, a good instructor can give the class a lot of fun and variety.

The best thing is that you can go at your own pace. Instructor tells you when to add/lessen the resistance, but you decide how much. Basically the workout can be as hard or easy as you make it. Since it's a group setting I was always motivated to work hard. As for outdoor cycling, I'm sure it helps with fitness but it definitely makes you appreciate the scenery and wind.

Seems a little old-fashioned. Are you in the College of Textiles? Try the NCSU craft center.

Har har hat. Thanks breakneck4, Wolfpacker06, and Nerdchick. What do people wear to these things? Bike shorts and jerseys or just regular gym garb?

Spinning shoes? You mean the ones that will clip onto the pedals of a regular bike?

"it really depends on the instructor"

i've found this to be very very true

try a few different instructors out if possible -- many tend to have very different styles, some you may like... others not so much

you can always make your workout more or less challenging, but i personally prefer an instructor who pushes you -- my favorite instructor (and now good friend after several years of taking her class) tends to come around and crank down on my resistance when she knows i can go harder

but i've also taken classes with a few instructors where i think my time would be better spent working out on my own...

wearing normal running shoes is totally fine, though when i eventually switched to cycling shoes that clip into the pedals i think i get a better workout

i'm not much of an outdoor cyclist, so i can't personally speak as to how it helps you there -- but i have several friends in my spin class who are triathletes (and while they obviously train in other forms, at least the indoor cycling doesn't seem to be counterproductive)

Went to my first one after work today. It was pretty cool. Hard, but fun. I can definitely see it helping me with my outdoor cycling once the sun starts setting later. Gonna be sore tomorrow!
