Only starting this b/c Apple's got a lot of heat on 'em to release some sort of Applephone, but we might see new laptops, who knows. We do know OWC is releasing some type of Mac Tablet mod, presumably a Macbook with a mod to the LCD that allows it to swivel around.
Lots of sites doing live coverage, here's a few:

^ so basically you're hoping they roll the MacBook and MacBook Pro into one line? It would be redundant to have 13" Macbooks and 13" MacBook Pros. I'd just like to see some more performance and a price drop in the 15" Pros. My wife has a 13" MacBook that has good enough performance, but the screen is just to damned small for me to use regularly. 1/9/2007 9:31:05 AM |

^ Nah man, they need a ultracompact pro machine. The 12" PowerBook G4 still brings in huge (relatively speaking) money on eBay for that reason. I think the Pro / non-Pro lines are quite distinct, regardless of LCD size.
But yeah, new lappies aren't exactly probable b/c there's nothing really new out there for them; they just went Core 2 Duo like 2-3 months ago. The only thing I'm thinking is Apple is gonna officially hop on the 802.11n bandwagon today.
Maybe its own 802.11n AirPort router...'cause iTV will need 802.11n.
I don't see how its computer lineup could improve that much based on the lack of new hardware (**save for the Core 2 Quad that Intel just "happened" to launch yesterday) out there, so they hafta make up for it in the accessory market I'd think.

Doubtful, since 802.11n does not yet exist. Linksys and other similar vendors are shipping product which may or may not be compatible with 802.11n when it is ratified. Some early testing I have come across suggests that the exiting pre-802.11n products do not operate between vendors yet. Also many of them, Linksys included, have much less range than expected.
and
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1703 says apple is waiting for IEEE specs to release 802.11n (Airport X2 X4) which starts at 300Mb and rises to 600Mb.1/9/2007 10:23:31 AM |

well all Apple needs to do is make sure the 802.11n on their iTV works with new Macs and whatever adapter they want to sell for existing Macs (and PCs?) to stream to the iTV 1/9/2007 10:57:59 AM |

^^ Or, you could realize that while the final 802.11n standard has yet to be ratified, about everyone & their mother is already shipping draft-N products, for better or worse.
INCLUDING Apple:
Plz to see here: http://www.engadget.com/2006/10/26/macbook-pros-also-shipping-with-secret-draft-n-cards/ http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/13/apple-put-its-supa-spicy-802-11n-into-the-macbook-too/ http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/29/core-2-duo-imacs-unofficially-rock-802-11n-capabilities/
I fully agree that shipping/buying draft-spec stuff is not intelligent, as you're just asking for compatibility issues down the road, but the market is there and people are dumb enough to buy it. I'm not saying Apple will def. ship any draft-N routers, but they're already shipping draft-N chipsets in their Macs.

early whispers are we get to hear final iTV details, potentially renamed...
blah, the last thing I wanna hear about is iTV. I own a DVR. I've got a PC that can hook up to my TV. I just can't imagine the market for media shifters is that big, but clearly I'm wrong. 1/9/2007 11:56:44 AM |

i think it will be big if apple sells movies that are of a high quality that are cheaper than dvds. people will want an easy way to get that to their tv. 1/9/2007 11:58:37 AM |
SouthPaW12 All American 10141 Posts user info edit post |
That's true, but seriously how haven't people figured out that BlockBuster online absolutely demolishes anything else out there.
like $18/month for nearly limitless DVDs...seriously oftentimes I can't even think of any more movies I want to watch. And if you lower your morals a bit, you can even keep the freaking things on your HDD for later viewing. 1/9/2007 12:00:16 PM |

I'd consider buying an iTV if it were competitively priced (i know, i know) 1/9/2007 12:07:16 PM |
SouthPaW12 All American 10141 Posts user info edit post |
I'll bet the pricing of the iTV won't be bad, because Apple isn't selling the iTV, it's selling the platform.
In other words, once you buy an iTV, you're stuck buying movies through Apple forever. They sell you 1 item and you inevitably buying dozens, maybe hundreds more things to go along with that 1 item.
It's pure brilliance. The iPod is a shining example. Look how many people buy tunes from iTunes - directly correlation w/ the hordes of iPod owners.
That said, the iPod is still a tad on the pricey side, but when the peons are buyin', don't drop the price. 1/9/2007 12:11:55 PM |
FanatiK All American 4248 Posts user info edit post |
Everything you said is very true, including the last line:
when the peons are buyin', don't drop the price.
plenty of peons just dying to have a mac that will sit next to their TV
alright, I'll shoot: .....$549

If it sells for $549, it better be the best one out there and have a LOT of fanboys
MediaGate sells about the most streamlined media server you could ask for, WiFi, HD-capable, HDMI/DVI, internal HDD, USB for external HDD connections - for $219, and you can stream any file you want, not just Apple's format, for example.

referring the new Apple TV.
EDIT: No iPod dock, which probably means Apple doesn't think your iPod should necessarily correspond heavily w/ video (boooo) and you should stream video directly from your PC/Mac. Granted, I'm not so sure the iPod itself could push 720p streams out wirelessly w/o frame drops, and if so, it'd kill the battery rather quickly.

$299 is a great price. That MediaGate I referred to early for $219 comes WITHOUT a hard drive, and right now only supports up to 802.11g.
Again, Apple is selling the platform, which is why the buy-in is cheap.
EDIT: 3 new products coming today.
If one isn't the Applephone, stock will plummet.

All I'm saying is that advertising it as 802.11n is completely misleading because IEEE HAS NOT RATIFIED the standard yet. The same shit happened when most network vendors came out with 802.3af switches and linecards (including cisco), and when it was eventually ratified, we all had to develop new ASICs to properly support IEEE inline power.
so they can put 802.11n all over their shit if they want, but it ain't 802.11n until IEEE says so.
Quote : | "it won't be the iphone. cisco has the trademark on that name." |
I wonder how they got around that. I imagine they're paying us royalties, but if that's the case, i'm surprised we came out with our own iPhone. ]1/9/2007 1:06:00 PM |

g'dang son this piece should cost like $800-900 w/o contract - seriously a high-end PPC is already near $500-600, and this thing demolishes it. I can envision lots of folks breaking contracts to get this thing. I might.
