So there's tons out there now and I want something in the likes of a nano. But if there is something out there that kicks its ass, or something with an SD card slot to have shittons of memory, that would be sweet too. What have people been getting lately? And are you happy with it? 1/10/2007 2:11:02 PM |

I have a new 8gb iPod nano. I've been sucessful at avioding having to use iTunes. I manage my iPod with winamp and it does a good job. Watch out for files that end in .MP3 instead of .mp3. I don't buy music from iTunes, so I never want to see it on my computer. I'm currently looking at some of the 3rd party software for the iPod that will allow you to play a wide array of music files like .oog and flac.
Think about what kind of music files you want to play, where you get your music from, size, battery life, durability, etc... Those are the questions you need to ask yourself to help choose a player. 1/10/2007 2:33:26 PM |

I just bought a Sandisk Sansa e280r
Basically an Ipod nano with video capability, will record live radio, FM tuner and voice recorder with an SD card slot. I am digging the capability but pissed at rapsody right now. It would not load my account with version 4.0 but 3.1 (which is ghetto) works so I am currently exploring options and searching here.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! 4/5/2007 9:21:52 PM |

I'm debating whether to buy the 2GB Nano now or wait for the 2GB Shuffle to come out this summer. 4/6/2007 2:35:35 AM |

why do you think the nano is better because of the accessories? 4/8/2007 1:13:09 AM |

I second the Sansa, if for no other reason than the SD card slot. That in itself is a Godsend. You can get 1-2Gb SD cards on Slickdeals and Buy.com for less than $20 shipped pretty much any given day.
To me, the video screen is a bit small for anything more than short video clips, but it's a nice feature that the iPod doesn't have at all in a player that size/price. The best feature it has over most mp3 players though is the price. It's way more reasonable than a Nano for the features you get. 4/8/2007 6:50:28 PM |

i have the 4gb insignia video player. the screen is great and the battery life is amazing. my only complaint is that it suddenly isnt recognized as playforsure compatible but that doesnt matter for me. i think i got it on sale for $110. 4/8/2007 7:31:47 PM |

agreed, and also agreed on the mini SD card slot. My phone uses the same thing so it is super easy to transfer small pics etc from one to the other. Plus, w/ it it is now a 10 gig player which is nice. way more than I need but still a nice thing to have....
I don't see why the sansa isn't more popular than the nano, can anyone tell me why it is supposedly better?4/8/2007 8:21:30 PM |

I bought a 20 GB Dell DJ from a friend for $10 because the headphone jack had messed up sound, took it apart, and fixed it good as new. I'm swearing off anything with i's in the name on principle. 4/8/2007 10:07:44 PM |

The iPod heritage, the iPod UI, more iPod accessories and the iPod's smaller-ness.
The Sansa is a nice player though. If the size doesn't bother you, it has a good UI, and a pretty good design overall. If I didn't have a bunch of mp4 music files already, I would consider getting one if I ever upgraded my iPod.4/8/2007 10:37:27 PM |

my only problem with the sansa is the plastic wheel, it feels really crappy and cheap 4/8/2007 11:28:19 PM |

^ That's like the 1st gen iPod. I imagine they aren't allowed to do a solid-state wheel because of the iPod. 4/8/2007 11:29:30 PM |

its not the fact that it rotates, its that its made out of a really cheap and uncomfortable plastic. the insignia rotates too but its a soft rubberized plastic. 4/8/2007 11:34:07 PM |

I don't mind the control wheel on the Sansa but then again I haven't played with too many nanos or insignias.
The lack of marketing I prefer. Itunes and i anything is just getting silly. I was able to find a good car charger/fm transmitter, case and speaker/charging station for the sansa which is all I really need for accessories.
I'd like to see other items challenge the ipod domination unforunately the uninformed masses prob won't figure out that it doesn't need an i in the name to play electronic music pod casts etc. 4/9/2007 1:27:08 AM |

yes, flac is a lot more (mine average 30MB, 6 times the mp3 size) space
but it is a lossless format so you get the option of converting to wave format and then whatever you want, etc, b/c there is nothing lost in the conversion process
as GB/$ increases, flac is a lot more appealing 4/9/2007 2:10:05 AM |
