old thread was too old.
SPOILER
the twist was that the people were not who they thought they were. mainly cleveland wasn't the guardian. then the final twist was reggie being the guardian. i know it wasn't a complete flip of the film like the other 2 mnight movies but they werre twists.
would have definately been cooler if she was discovered to be evil.
I love how everybody knew the exact twist coming in the village
o and the water thing in signs added up. someone said the water in the atmosphere would have killed them but i can buy the fact that it was only liquid water and not vapor that they were allergic to.
Dude's movies are amazing.

So alien life forms that are supposed to be more intelligent that humans (based on the fact that they travel to far off planets) decide to go after a planet that is 3/4 covered in their poison?
that's like us trying to conquer "planet cyanide"

I have really liked every single movie this guy has done
all he had to do was make this movie not completely suck and I would've been thrilled with it
but it absolutely sucked, worst movie of the year in my opinion 1/13/2007 1:51:58 PM |

What exactly didn't you all like about Lady in the Water?
I'll give you that Signs was bad, but that's pretty much his only outright "bad" movie, IMO. 1/14/2007 2:26:42 AM |

hehe, Signs, Lady in the Water, The Village were my favorites. 6th Sense I never cared for, Unbreakable was eh? But I don't watch movies based on their reviews/hype/cast/crew (I learned my lesson from Congo, great book by the way). And I certainly don't want a movie to be a formulaic copy of a previous flick...in other words, who cares if this movie didn't have a 'twist'?

I didn't like Lady in the Water because it just seemed like it wasn't even trying.
SPOILER-ISH AHEAD.
The landlord guy gets all these people together, and basically says, "Hey, I have this goddess-type in my apartment, and I need you to fulfill these crazy-ass roles." And instead of the people looking at him like he's crazy, instead of having ANY amount of conflict, they all instantly go along with it. Everyone believes him right off the bat without a hitch. It all just seemed so stupid. 1/14/2007 11:23:46 AM |

Your mistake is that you assumed the aliens were supposed to be more intelligent based on a fact that does not suggest this at all. I don't remember the movie claiming the aliens were more intelligent than the humans in the least bit.
Group A having something which group B doesn't does not necessarily make group A more intelligent than group B. Have you studied history at all? Kinda difficult to have copper, gold, diamonds, (any natural substance) if it is not in your environment. It's never explained how they travel, perhaps it's with the aid of something the humans just don't have, perhaps it's a technology they did not create but copied from some other aliens. Perhaps something was invented at some point which led to a technology being created which assisted in space travel. Perhaps they have space ships but they don't have nuclear power (this is all very possible in the realm of the film). you assume to know things which are never explored in the movie. (Guns, Germs, and Steel could be an interesting read for you)
Also, what if there is no natural substance on their planet or where they've explored that is what we think of as poison? Why would they ever look for it.
That being said; I'm not real big on M. Night and i didn't really like signs, but I did like Lady in the Water.1/14/2007 1:19:28 PM |

for all we knew maybe they knew water was poisonous but what they came to earth for was worth the risk. What makes you think they didn't think it would be poisonous to us as well since we only live on land?

because they were all from that land in some wierd way. the movie says that they were all lead to live around the vessal to help the cause. They were not regular humans and they got the pins and needles feeling when they were in the presence of the narf. Their thoughts were clear once they saw her and they knew she had a powerful effect on them.1/14/2007 3:45:00 PM |

M. Night Shyamalan, long considered one of Hollywood’s most gimmicky directors, finally went over the edge into full-blown insanity with this so-called children’s “fable” that just happens to make Shyamalan himself the one man who can save the world with his brilliance. It’s the role he was born to play. But instead of the mere vanity project that this could have been, it runs completely off the rails into maniacal incoherence; a laughable mess of bad dialogue, even worse character sketches, and a finale so absurd I’m not sure Uwe Boll would have touched it. So earnest as to be unendurable, it immediately became one of the worst films I have ever seen, and certainly the single most dreadful experience at the cinema during the past quarter-century. At bottom, every frame -- lovingly crafted from Shyamalan’s own bedtime stories to his now traumatized children -- reeks of arrogance, disdain for the audience, and yes, even the rules of cinema, which state that above all, entertain. Between the rage-filled lunges at the screen and eye-rolling guffaws, such an end becomes impossible. If there’s justice, this will reduce Shyamalan to a laughable footnote, never to be spoken of again." |

your argument had more "maybe's" and "what if's" than my assumption...
but either way, don't you think that it wouldn't take an alien life form all of about three hours on earth to figure out we have plenty of water on hand to kill them with...
and for the record, I liked all of M. Night's movies, even lady in the water...a bit. I just think that water being their poison was way too much of a simple way to end the movie and if anything a blatant rip off of War of the Worlds.1/14/2007 4:56:33 PM |

Are you talking about Signs here? Because if you are, then you completely missed the point of the movie.

Considering that Lady in the Water is a fantasy movie, that's an idiotic way to analyze it. If you are expecting to see a comedy, all those observations would be accurate, but the fact that it's a fantasy movie allows for absurdity. I could say the same thing about Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Star Wars, because they're all pretty absurd, but that's what people are looking for in those respective genres.1/14/2007 8:25:43 PM |

I rented it the other day mainly for my wife to see, and we had a good time. Apparently I am not a fucking film snob and can suspend my reality better than others to simply appreciate the escape from reality that a movie gives. While I do appreciate a better story, acting, etc. I can also enjoy a movie that many people think blows. For example, I enjoyed Waterworld, which was fucking horrible by most accounts. 1/14/2007 11:58:31 PM |
