The front page of the tech is an article on how it should be a day of civil rights action, not just lip-service honoring on your day off from work.

Is anyone actually doing anything civil rights or otherwise for MLK day?

Me too. But working at a vet clinic, as I imagine with any healthcare provider, you can't take much time off. With x-mas I only got 1 day off, so its not like they are specifically just not honoring this day.

Here's the front page of the daily tarheel.

http://www.dailytarheel.com/media/storage/paper885/news/2007/01/12/City/Residents.Fight.Bushs.Decision-2628403.shtml?sourcedomain=www.dailytarheel.com&MIIHost=media.collegepublisher.com

Quote :
"Residents fight Bush's decision
Franklin Street's sidewalks saw a politically charged crowd Thursday night as about 200 participants protested President Bush's announcement to increase the number of troops in Iraq. Added to the outcry were countless supporters in passing cars who lay on their horns as prompted by protesters' signs that said, "Honk if you oppose the escalation!"
"

I got to do a MLK candlelight vigil thing with Sara Yasin before, but this year it looks like I'll work all day and be closing.

The tech article seems to describe civil rights activism as the duty of the youth, I can sorta see that in that I had more free time as a student last year than as a full time employee this year, but I think its still more of a duty for all ages.

Anyone both work tomorrow and have plans to do something mlk/civil rights related?

yet another embarrassing article printed in our school's "newspaper." Although not quite as bad as the one four years ago on MLK day where an african american student said we should work on making things better for our "predecessors." And it wasn't just a typo, he said it several times.

Actually, I'm tucked into my comfy chair in the pleasure of my own home, the white man built, and I'm posting carefree on the internet hoping to aggrandize other users to do my share. This is all at the expense of some minority working out there to seal things will run smoothly.

What're you doing boss man, giving some lip-service?

I was at the office last night and it seemed like every decent looking white girl was there with a black guy. I guess those girls were showing the MLK appreciation last night

This is almost cliche to say at this point, but performing civil rights action on MLK day is a nice gesture at the most. People have to do it more than once a year to make a difference.

Federal Holliday, yeah for working for the feds......I am mainly resting my knee(like I have all weekend), had a nasty fall while jogging last Wednesday night. One more day should help out alot before I tackle the steps of death at work.

I kicked a dude out of my bar last night who wouldn't shut the fuck up about MLK.

Him: You know tomorrow is MLK day?? (yelling every time he speaks)

Me: Yep.

Him: Then answer this for me. Why are we celebrating a man who was a known Communist???

Me: Are you serious?

Him: It's a proven fact. MLK was a fucking communist. And we've got a national holiday for him.

Me: Seriously...stop with this subject.

5 minutes later...

Him: Hey...

Me: Is this about MLK...because I told you to drop it.

Him: Of course it is. You know his speech..."I have a Dream"??? He didn't even write that speech!! Someone else wrote it.

Me: Who wrote it then?

Him: He didn't!

Me: Well whether or not he wrote it...he gave the speech...and him giving that speech impacted a lot more people than if the person who wrote it gave the speech. And seriously...I told you to drop it...so drop it.

Him: I'm not dropping it...this is America, and I can say whatever I want, and the fact that we're celebrating MLK...

Me: And this is my bar, and I can refuse service to whoever I want. Get the fuck out of here. Don't make me physically remove you from here.

*He leaves...fellow bar patrons clap and cheer.

That's my civil rights action for the holiday.

what I don't understand is why we don't celebrate things like Thomas Edison day, or Ben Franklin Day. Which would you rather have, light bulbs and electricity or a speech?

What do you mean "doing anything civil rights"?

I'd assume sitting where you want on the bus, drinking from the same fountain as another race, and entering any business to purchase pie aren't good enough for you?

What should we do? Don't get me wrong, MLK was a great man and we should totally honor his legacy, but it isn't a day to advance civil rights, it is a day to remember and pay tribute to someone who helped bring about the most important advancements of civil rights in the last century.

Because Easter is on a sunday and the vast majority of the federal government already gets sundays off.

i'd think that his actions for the civil rights movement in america would far outweigh his personal affairs.

^ How about honoring those who did serve our country? NC State University does not close for Veteran's Day.

BTW, I support Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a number of reasons--before you start with the name-calling.

never said he (lee) didn't. but the fact that he fought against our country pretty well negates that.
we don't have days for every general who fought in wars for our country, nor should we.
there could be arguments for other leaders whom we should celebrate in addition to or in the place of MLK.
i really don't think robert e lee should be on that list.
i think the only reason his name comes up in discussions like this is racist backlash.

Jan 15th is Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson day in VA. We should also not celebrate or recognize any native american's right because they fought a war against our country too. Wrong idea let people make up there own holidays if they want to. Free country remember.

so i shouldn't express my opinion about thinking a robert e lee day is ridiculous?
i'm not saying it should be illegal to have a robert e lee day or anything. it's just stupid and unjustified.
i don't think we should celebrate stonewall jackson day either (and i'm related to the guy).
they fought in a war against the united states.

and there's some justified guilt with the native americans.
we killed most of their population and endlessly lied to them and manipulated them. a holiday is the least we can do
(though it really doesn't amount to much of anything at this point).
