UPDATE: Okay, well this is weird. So Brendan was taken off life support and is STILL living! So much so that he asked for chicken nuggets. So back to the drawing board. My cousin said they found B- donors for blood. Now they need bone marrow.

Anyone have any ideas on how to find someone with matching marrow?

Quote :
"The surgical process of marrow collection is the most common and longest practiced form of donation. The procedure is often performed in a single day on an outpatient basis. Some collection centers may require an overnight stay, depending on the type of anesthesia used.

You arrive at the hospital in the morning, change into a hospital gown, and receive an IV. You enter the operating room when the surgeon is ready. You receive general anesthesia through the IV, meaning you are unconscious throughout the surgical procedure. Some centers use a local anesthesia to numb only the area where donation will occur, and you remain conscious. Be sure to ask the center personnel how they use anesthesia.

The surgeon typically removes marrow from the iliac crest, which is the back part of the pelvis (your hip bone). Several incisions—from four to eight—are made in your skin, and a large hollow needle is inserted several times through these incisions into the bone to extract the marrow. The incisions are small enough to heal without requiring stitches.

About one or two pints (500-1,000 milliliters) of marrow are taken, representing only 2%-5% of your body's entire marrow. The procedure lasts 60 to 90 minutes. The bone marrow is cleaned to remove bone fragments and unwanted blood components. The marrow may also be specially treated and frozen for transportation. Frozen marrow can last as long as three years.

You will be moved to a recovery room following the surgery until you wake up from the anesthesia. Then you will be moved to a hospital room. When you go home depends on how quickly you recover fully from the anesthesia. "

^I'm pretty sure you aren't charged for the procedure...kinda like some vets don't charge you if it's a rescue...

The Red Cross runs a national bone marrow library of sorts, where you can be cataloged based on results from a simple blood test. I don't know the specifics on how they determine who is a good candidate, but this seems like the best option.

first of all, they test your blood to see if you are a match

if so, it hurts like hell, they get it from your hip bone, with a huge ass needle....

lol, that makes it sound like you are filling a cavity, BULLSHIT, hurts like hell and takes awhile to recover

It hurts, yeah. It's a big needle.

But it doesn't take that long and you're doing someone a great service.

Like I said in the other thread, I'm O- bloody (universal donor) ... I don't know what the requirements are for marrow but if I can help I will be happy to. I'm glad to hear that he is doing better.

Incidentally, marrow matching is more complex than just blood type. It requires matching HLA (antigens present on the cells) types. The easiest option is a sibling donor, which isn't possible in this case.

Even if the blood type is incompatible, it's possible to eliminate the red blood cells from the donated marrow (the real goal of a BMT is to transplant the progenitors of white cells).

there is a bone marrow registry, which i'm sure the doctors have told your family about

i'm in the database

and if anyone in this thread is serious about helping someone in need of bone marrow, go join the registry

bone marrow matches outside of sibling relationships are rare but possible

you will probably need to go to one of their centers to get a sample of your blood taken so they can put the info in the database

i've been in the registry for about 3 years and haven't recieved a call yet

here is the info from the letter i have from the registry i'm in

National Marrow Donor Program

i've had about 2000 spinal taps and anything with the bone marrow isn't very fun, but the procedures now are a lot less painful than when i was 2.5 years old. good luck!

I've been meaning to get on a bone marrow registry. I'll ask the Red Cross folks about it the next time they are at work for a blood drive.

It is very rare that you will actually be found as a match. I had a teacher in high school who was called after being on the registry for years. From what I've heard the recovery process takes a couple of days and it is painful, but it would be worth it to save a life.

Shouldn't you be asking doctors/hospitals on how to find matching bone marrow instead of TWW?

it never hurts to try every possible outlet. a lot of marrow donors are found through message boards, word of mouth, etc.

my brother had to have a stem cell transplant (took adult stem cells from his bone marrow, then gave massive chemo, then reinjected the stem cells to help replace his blood cells that were killed during chemo).

i can tell you, the marrow extraction hurts like hell. he experienced a lot of pain during his treatment, but he said the marrow surgery was one of the worst.

Wow this is really awesome that he's actually doing better!! How long can they keep giving him transfusions?

I'm O+, so if anyone is a + and needs a pint of my blood, let me know. I should get marrow typed, I would go through the proceedure if I knew it would save someone's life. I mean, pain for a few days for me...giving someone another chance at life...the choice is obvious.

Exactly

TWW is not my main method. But I know how kind and generous the students are at State and figured this would be a good way to reach a lot of people at once.

Yup I read up about the whole process.

Now we just need a match. He can take b negative blood and then he needs a bone marrow match which will have to come from someone with b negative blood. Anyone?

I wish the damn typing kits from marrow.org weren't $52

Looks like if you're typed at a drive or otherwise in person, odds are good that you won't have to pay. But...the next drive in NC is in March in Charlotte, and the nearest center to campus is in Durham. I'm still gonna give them a call.

The guy I knew who donated marrow gave it to a 3-year-old girl who ended up living after the transplant. He said that it hurt so bad he could barely move, but then one day he woke up and felt better and went off to fight in Iraq.
