Running shoes (that will actually be used for serious running) should be researched, tried on, fitted, etc. I wouldn't suggest buying something that is such an important part of the running process for someone else.

Other than that, I've always loved asics.

^very true. unless you know how her foot hits the ground (i.e. what kind of support she needs) and exactly what size she is... and I <3 asics

it might be a good idea to go with her to try on shoes and then go back and get them, or you could just buy them on the spot.

and if you pick up a copy of endurance (free run/cycle/swim mag), there are always coupons for running shoes in there.

Brooks are really good running shoes....they only sell them at Finish Line and then like Run For Your Life and other running stores. There are a couple like Adreneline that say GTS on the side, just look you can see it easily and it stands for "Go To Shoe" this shoe works for most people, has gel on the inside to prevent pronating and such. hope this helps

Take her to The Athlete's Foot in Cameron Village. They'll start from scratch, complete a gait analysis, and then work with her until she finds the most comfortable shoe for her foot.

Everyone's foot is different, and will fit the same shoe differently. The correct shoe for one person could be a complete disaster for another.

I work at The Athlete's Foot and we get numerous medical referrals a day from PT's who send their clients in for a technical shoe fitting. That's what we specialize in.

Prices for a good mid-range shoe will be between $85-$95 (Asics 2110, 2120...Brooks Adrenaline 6, 7....Saucony Guide, Omni....New Balance 766, 767...Various Mizuno models as well). These are just the stability shoes listed. We also feature just as many Neutral shoes such as the Asics Cumulus, Nimbus...Brooks Glycerine, Radius... Saucony Ride, Triumph 4, etc.

I promise, she wont be dissapointed in our selection, and she'll leave the store in a comfortable pair of shoes that will further motivate her to get out there and run.

^ Agreed.

It's not likely that you would be able to pick out the best shoe without her even trying it on. Athlete's Foot is great and they're very knowlegeable like he said. So for her birthday, just take her there and say you'll buy her a pair of shoes.

^I would suggest doing that, but get her a nice card and make a little coupon for a pair of running shoes, so she still has something to open and knows you care.

I always get confused by pronation and supination.

My heel strikes on the outside first. I actually have very little arch to my foot (reckon it's because I am so goddamn big?), and I wear out the outer edge of my soles quite quickly.

Every running shoe I get ends up beat down and worn out after about 3 months.

Thanks to this thread I'll be heading to Athlete's Foot tomorrow. I don't know about my gait, but I have very high arches that always ache after a few hours of activity, which is not helping my fitness plans.

^^^It's VERY normal for people to strike on the outside edge of the back of their shoe. That's actually what you want.

However, if you still wear out the outside of your shoe completely sooner than the rest of your shoe, you Supinate (roll to the outside). This is normal, and means that you need to be in a neutral shoe.

There isnt much that you can do to correct this. You just need to make sure that you're wearing a completely neutral shoe in order to minimize your amount of supination.

If you really wanted to have the shoes for her to open, you could bring in her old running shoes to Athlete's Foot and get a pretty good approximation, I would think. I always bring in my old ones so they can see what shoe I've been wearing and how they have worn. I always like Asics for durability and support. I love my New Balances, but not to do serious running in, they always tear at the seams and don't last well for trail running.
