Denver Post:

This text is from a county emergency manager out in the central part of Colorado after last weeks snowstorm.

WEATHER BULLETIN

Up here, in the Northern Plains, we just recovered from a Historic event--- may I even say a "Weather Event" of "Biblical Proportions" --- with a historic blizzard of up to 44" inches of snow and winds to 90 MPH that broke trees in half, knocked down utility poles, stranded hundreds of motorists in lethal snow banks, closed ALL roads, isolated scores of communities and cut power to 10's of thousands.

FYI:

George Bush did not come.

FEMA did nothing.

No one howled for the government.

No one blamed the government.

No one even uttered an expletive on TV

Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton did not visit.

Our Mayor did not blame Bush or anyone else.

Our Governor did not blame Bush or anyone else, either.

CNN, ABC, CBS, FOX or NBC did not visit - or report on this category 5 snowstorm. Nobody demanded $2,000 debit cards.

No one asked for a FEMA Trailer House.

No one looted.

Nobody - I mean Nobody demanded the government do something.

Nobody expected the government to do anything, either.

No Larry King, No Bill O'Rielly, No Oprah, No Chris Mathews and No Geraldo Rivera.

No Shaun Penn, No Barbara Striesand, No Hollywood types to be found.

Nope, we just melted the snow for water.

Sent out caravans of SUV's to pluck people out of snow engulfed cars.

The truck drivers pulled people out of snow banks and didn't ask for a penny.

Local restaurants made food and the police and fire departments delivered it to the snowbound families.

Families took in the stranded people - total strangers.

We fired up wood stoves, broke out coal oil lanterns or Coleman lanterns.

We put on extra layers of clothes because up here it is "Work or Die".

We did not wait for some affirmative action government to get us out of a mess created by being immobilized by a welfare program that trades votes for 'sittin at home' checks.

Even though a Category "5" blizzard of this scale has never fallen this early, we know it can happen and how to deal with it ourselves.

"In my many travels, I have noticed that once one gets north of about 48 degrees North Latitude, 90% of the world's social problems evaporate."

It does seem that way, at least to me.

Maybe SOME people will get the message. The world does Not owe you a living.

The situations are so similar, too.

The way the snow destroyed out all those houses, and drowned all those people. Uncanny.

This storm was blamed on a number of deaths already. And it is threatening tens of thousands of head of livestock.

My point is, the people of this region are helping themselves, rather than squealing for the government or lashing out saying people don't care about them. This didn't happen in New Orleans at all.

Now he's talking about how farmers don't depend on the government. Billions in subsidies anyone?

(btw, government helicopters are actually airlifting food to the livestock as we speak)

other than the fact that all your shit is just plain false?

The government was "howled" for.
Very few people, if any, have lost their homes because of this. As opposed to Katrina where half of a fucking city cant live in their homes, if those homes are even there.
You cant loot if you cant leave your house. Thanks for trying though.
You melted the snow? Congrats. Im sure that drinking water full of sewage, dead bodies and chemicals would have solved all of NO's problems.
All those acts of charity and more happened during Katrina. Its not a matter of NO being full of better or worse people. More good things happened because more people were affected.

I hope to see you terminated for this, but sadly, moderation on such topics is often lacking.

Actually, there's a reason farmers are subsidized. It's because if they wern't, they would just quit farming and do something else. Why don't we just let them do that? Because you can't depend on the rest of the world for food in times of crisis.

It's acceptable so long as you received it via a chain email your grandmother send you.

It's the TWW Grandmother Clause. Look it up.

^ Just like we wouldn't be able to depend on fast food in times of crisis if it weren't for welfare

RevoltNow knows full well that its completely Bush's ineptness that caused all the bad things resulted from Katrina...Bush built the levees, Bush forgot to tell them that there was a huge hurricane in the gulf and that they should leave their home, and Bush didnt personally pump the water out of NO

Katrina killed 1800+ people.

So CNN would technically be justified in giving Katrina 30 times the coverage as this Blizzard.

lol, once again

the point was made

but you missed it completely because it doesn't pander to your beliefs

if 1/30 of the people in NO had the desire to survive then there would have been less deaths and maybe less stupidity...

so who is to blame for the gang violence and general lack of "act right" after katrina?

or are some people not accountable for their actions?

if life gives you lemons you don't sit and bitch because you wanted orange juice... some folks understand that, some don't

So in a 24-hour news day, CNN is giving this blizzard story less than 30 seconds of coverage?

24 hours / 3000 (assuming Katrina took 100% of each day's coverage)

^ So what percentage of the population acted a fool?

Well that's because of a competent government reaction, not the character of the people.

Even if the reaction had been as terrible as it was in NO, this is the reddest area of America. Bush could've carpet bombed them and they wouldn't have said anything.

Let's keep a running comparison between the two storms. We'll update it as time goes by

Katrina:
1800 dead
700 missing
$25 billion in damage

2007 Blizzard:
60 dead
XX missing
$XX in damage

even though katrina caused a lot more death and damage, they're still both natural disasters...read that, NATURAL disasters...as in its natural and people cant do anything about it except try to get away from it

I never said they are the same

I'm saying some people are more self sufficient than others

both are shitty situations to be in

and most people would have a better chance at surving a snowstorm than a flood, doesn't mean "well this sucks, I'm gonna stay right here and bitch instead of survive"

it's not a hidden fact that farmers and ranchers are a bit more self sufficient when it comes to survival in harsh conditions

if they were that sufficient down there they probably would have not lived their in the first place

I don't think anyone said that.

There was a lot of bitching, but there was a lot to bitch about (seriously, can you blame them?). That doesn't mean they weren't doing anything in the meanwhile.

I wouldn't disagree though that the people in Colorado on average would be slightly more prepared for survival.

no, they had a right to bitch for sure, but the bitching should have started at the local level, where the problem began before the storm...

Nah I doubt it. But if they were threatened with drowning in sewage, I bet they would get the hell outta Dodge before it actually happened.

Actually, hog farmers in NC were presented with this situation a while back when Floyd hit here. Flooded scores of thousands of acres in Eastern NC. Fucked a whole bunch of shit up, washed everything away, sewage, toxic stuff everywhere. This storm's legacy is still here in the form of widespread FEMA trailers in the Neuse and Tar River basins and pollution in our sounds. What did these farmers do? Went to high ground and lived. When the storm passed, they got in their boat and motored around looking for those that were just a bit too slow witted to move to high ground. I'd say that they were pretty well adapted to not drowning in sewage. Which is the whole point. Survival skills and self sufficient mentality are severely underrated in America these days because people think that they can squeal for a cop, the government, FEMA, or other taxpayers and everything will be ok. When it doesn't work out their way, they blame everyone else and bitch and moan about how the rest of the country "doesn't care about them".

So you can either save yourself, or you can count on a politician to save you. Which option makes the most sense?

Katrina was a man-made disaster. Had FEMA acted the way it has in the snow storm, namely doing nothing, everything would have worked out better.

Sure, people would have still died, but the suffering and the dislocation would have been over sooner.

Not everyone had the opportunity to get out of dodge. The city rather than put people on busses and drive them away from NO they just drove the busses away.

These are two completely incongruous events.
