So I failed ch101 the first time I took it last semester and I just registered for the class again. I'm already behind and confused. Anyone wanna tutor me for free or in exchange with help with another class? I must warn you, I pretty much just suck at chemistry.. it makes no sense to me at all. 1/23/2007 5:16:34 PM |

take it with dr. hendrickson and goto class everyday. She is the most relaxed, open minded, and helpful prof. Ive ever dealt with. Her notes that she gives on her website and during class explain all material very well. Do your webassigns everyday and go to the chem tutorial center in fox to get help with whatever questions you have and you should pass easily. Just do your homework, read the book, and take good notes and it will be a breeze. 1/23/2007 10:54:02 PM |

I had the supposed devil reincarnated(Warren) my freshman year and still managed to get an A. It's probably a good thing I wasn't introduced to tww until midway through the semester or i would have probably dropped the class. I hated chemistry but I guess the chemistry nazi I had in high school helped me once I got to state. 1/24/2007 1:01:57 PM |

Check the tutorial center out, go through a short orientation, and then you can get FREE one-on-one tutoring. There are plenty of people tutoring CH101, and you can pretty much work it around your schedule.
Also, the chemistry tutorial center in FOX is a drop-in center and they can help with short concepts / homework.
Check out resources on the internet on effective study methods. Many students just haven't figured out what study methods are most effective for them, so try out a few different techniques.
Use the resources available to you, and go to class. 1/25/2007 12:14:41 AM |

i took ch101 and ch201 online with wertz, and it really wasnt that bad at all - i thought it was a lot better than sitting in a class, because the teachers were the ones that confused ya (and on tests you get 2 tries at a problem, so you'll know if youre right or wrong) 1/25/2007 12:43:09 PM |

I don't know if Sandberg still teached 101 or not, but if she does, take it with her. Her class is a little harder, but if you have trouble with chemistry, it is the way to go. She is an excellent instructor and she makes sure you understand what is going on. By far the best professor I had while I was at State. If you have any questions, you can send me a message and I will help you out!

^^^ NO!! He's gone, thank God. (And I hope my letter had a little something to do with it.) He was finally fired 2 semesters ago. Not only did he not know what he was talking about, he was incapable of teaching Chemistry, grading fairly, and listening to you. He would never show for meetings that he scheduled with you. I had Garland my first try, and I missed the C-wall by 1.7 points...and I had to retake the whole class with Orji. I did not think I was going to make it out of that class, but I can honestly say that I passed that class without any help from him, and without any learning whatsoever.

I love it when people blame the fact that they don't learn anything/fail on the teacher.
Yes, a teacher can suck at teaching/life/etc. , but the fact remains that it's your own responsibility to learn. You can have a great teacher and still fail if you don't put forth any effort. No one can learn for you.
I give this thread a D-. 2/10/2007 5:52:02 PM |

^while I agree with you that it's the student's responsibility to learn, the teacher is there to make the learning process easier. IMO, the teacher is very important in the learning process. 2/10/2007 6:08:50 PM |

With an exception given for those students that had the great misfortune to be 'taught' under Orji (thank God I was all over Packtracks all summer until one slot opened up in a different teacher's class), but it is freaking chem 101, I mean that was the same class as 10th grade chemistry for fucks sake. I found myself being lulled to sleep every day by Dr.Boss' bass monotone so I quit going to lecture, taught myself by doing the webassign, and breezed out with a cool A-. I guess college really isn't meant for everybody though..... 2/10/2007 10:29:13 PM |

I came to college, having never seen Chemistry before. It was not required at my HS and all my teachers/counselor knew I was going to college for a science related major. And noone recommended it. I got into that class my first semester here, and worked my ass off. All I wanted was a C- because I just didn't catch on-mind you-I made A+ in all my other classes that semester. And when I missed it by 1.7 points and had to retake it-you can imagine the feeling. I know noone can learn for me, but putting up power point slides and just reading them, never doing extra problems for examples is NOT teaching. Of course you have to put forth effort, we're not in 3rd grade anymore. And I took the reponsibility to go to great extra lengths to learn what was going on, mostly on my own, to come out of that class with a substantially good, passing grade my second try. ^Obviously, just because I did poorly in Chemistry, does not mean that I am not cut out for college. CHEMISTRY is not for everyone. I will be done with a major and a minor next year, and a very good GPA. 2/11/2007 12:44:17 AM |

I'll agree that public school sucks, and your situation is understandable. Freshman year, sure people can have trouble adjusting and mess up on a class, thats what freshman retake is there for after all. Getting Orji after that was also terrible luck, like I said above, people who had to suffer through him are an exception, his grade distributions are horrific and there is definitely something seriously wrong when half of a 220+ student class is below the C wall. I was just surprised at the number of people responding that had to take an introductory, freshman semester GER course multiple times. 2/11/2007 1:23:57 AM |

^^Sorry, but I honestly don't know how you could've planned a science major and not realized that, yes, you do need an introduction to physics and chemistry.
what is your major?

Like ^^ said "public school sucks" when it comes to notifying you of what you need to be college prepared. I even recall asking my Jr. counselor when I was about to be a Senior if I needed to take a Chemistry class to be ready, and all she said was "No, you have all your science credits and I dont think you really need it." I didnt have or need a physics intro, that crap was rediculously easy. It was probably covered for about a week in my physical science class I took sophomore year in HS, but the rest was math, and math is a sinch. I didn't realize I needed Chemistry because I had no idea what college held in store. And counselors are there for you to set you in the right direction. I thought when I asked and she said that I didn't need it, I thought I didn't need it. 2/11/2007 5:20:08 PM |

^I'm from a town of less than 1500 people, most of which are old. The county would rather put money into the athletic department than academic departments and tutoring. We don't have decent counselors. There is more emphasis on just barely getting by in high school so you can continue working at Ingles or Walmart, farming or doing construction with your daddy and uncle or being a good athlete than learning. I'm not the only girl from my school to be discouraged from going to a real college for a real major instead of just going to TCCC for Cosmetology or the folk school because "science itsn't a lady's place" and "some things are just better left in the hands of men."
I know that public school sucks, but there are other sources of information other than your counselors. Ideally, they correctly advise you, but you can always find things out yourself. 2/11/2007 6:25:17 PM |
