it seems like almost every year for the last few years "the youngest coach in nfl history" has been hired. last year it was the jets and mangini. this year the raiders. a little while back gruden. sure there is someone in between.

Young coaches are innovative and adapt to the game and the players. It's the same for almost any industry.

not a good idea so much as a safe investment.

if they pan out then super, if not then you can start over.

well i'm guessing you're referring to the steelers, and i'll just mention that 15 years ago bill cowher was 34 also.

owners are unlikely to completely hand over the reins to young coaches. thus they are justified in bringing in their own staff rather than letting the coach pick it himself. these guys aren't coaches/gm's like mike holmgren.

if the guy you hire pans out, you can hope to bank on a longer time with the same guy at the helm than you could if you hired an older guy for the job (e.g. Parcells)

Well you might try to get a young unproven coach in the NFL and try to see what they can do. Bill Cowher is a good example of hiring young and look what it did for the Steelers. if you hired old predictable coaches then people know about them and their habits. A young new coach can fire up a team.
