Now with GPS
Quote : | "If you suffer from a pricey speed addiction, a nasty habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or just happen to enjoy breaking the law, you might want to give Escort's Passport 9500i radar detector a look-see. Along with the traditional radar detector functionality of giving you a bleep or three when you need to slow down, the 9500i carries a GPS payload that allows for all sorts of exciting possibilities. First off, you can let the detector know about false alarm spots -- such as an automatic door sensor -- and keep the 9500i from alerting you to those specific radar frequencies when you're in that area. Even if a copper happens to show up next to that false alarm location, the detector will be able to differentiate and sound the alarm. The detector also lets you mark common speed trap locations so that the 9500i can remind you when they're coming up and you can engage your cloaking device slow down in time. Other intelligence boosts have made it into the Passport as well, but you'll sure be paying for the convenience: it'll take a whoppin' $450 to score yourself one of these, so you had better better be in great need of its ticket-dodging prowess." |

its not a new generation, its just another radar detector with a new gadget tacked on.
so how long will it be until someone makes a all in one unit with radar detector, GPS nav, onstar, bluetooth, DVD, alarm, mp4 all that shit. 2/8/2007 12:58:41 AM |

wont help when dick-ass cops make up your speed
I've gotten 80 in a 60 (70 on my speedo) *ticketed* dropped to 75 by cop, 69 by DA 56 in a 45 (50 on my speedo) *warning*
my speedo is off now by +6.2% It takes a big difference to throw off speeds by as much as those cops claimed (i.e. 50 as 56 would need 12% difference, 2x as much). So I wont attribute it to atmosphere, humidity, etc
DOES NOT COMPUTE
I thought by the title that the new detector will tell you locations of all cops Now that'd be useful. The current GPS usage seems useless to me. I mean, I couldn't care less if I were able to designate spots as RADAR-noise hotspots 2/8/2007 9:34:58 AM |

or when you just get a dickhead cop like bob on g105 did. he got a ticket for 57/55 from a trooper. turns out the trooper was in the left lane on the beltline going exactly 55 and of course every other fucking idiot (it appears they were actually smart in this case) was staying behind him. well, not bob! he passes the trooper in the right lane only to get pulled over. i dont blame bob. ill pass a cop in a sec. as long its reasonable which i would think in bob's case it was. 2/8/2007 10:57:09 AM |

^yeah, cops like that are dicks.
And the worst part, that cop would get called out over the radio. If I was the cop and saw bob... I would have prolly done something stupid/funny and not be anal and give a ticket... but that's just me and I'm not a cop... 2/8/2007 11:02:17 AM |

technically yes, but its not enforced a lot here in the states, unlike in europe. cops do it to be dicks though. 2/8/2007 12:00:30 PM |

^in europe, people are a lot better about driving in the lane that they're supposed to instead of cruising mindlessly in the passing lane, so you aren't forced to pass them on the right (or left, in the UK).

yeah, i got pulled for a similar scenario by a Pullen Park cop. I guess he didn't have the balls to actually write me a ticket for 5-over, so he ended up writing me a ticket for expired sticker on my tag (it had been sent to my dad's house instead of my college address, so i didn't even know it was out) and lecturing me about how "even though he wears a different uniform and drives a different car, he's still RPD and has to be respected just like any other police officer."
What a douche. People like him are the reason people hate cops, and why normally upstanding people outrun them instead of sticking around to find out if the cop is reasonable.
Oh, and I must be the only person in history to have received traffic citations from Pullen Park cops on TWO SEPERATE OCCASSIONS.2/8/2007 12:57:03 PM |

obstructing the flow of traffic is illegal as well, if the cop wasn't passing anyone he shouldn't have been in the left lane2/8/2007 4:15:53 PM |

While I wouldn't write a ticket in that case I think its VERY stupid to pass a cop car whos going the speed limit. You might as well flip him off as you drive past him because you're basically tellin him you dont care. Even though theres an absolute speed limit law most cops will give at least 10-15 mph over before issuing a citation out on open road. Of course in residential neighborhoods or around schools you are given less. 2/9/2007 2:20:19 PM |

i received a citation for 70 in a 45. cop knocked it down to 59 on the spot.
i was in a 55 mph zone, pulled over in a 45.
i doubt it makes a difference, but the cop lied. 2/9/2007 9:31:56 PM |

meh to GPS in a detector. A really useful feature would be internet connectivity where all the detectors upload their information. Then, the website can synthesize the data to create an up-to-date, accurate picture of where cops are sitting. 12/28/2007 4:39:02 PM |
TreeTwista10 minisoldr 148446 Posts user info edit post |
I was thinking the direction and intensity of the radar signal could be tied into the GPS and essentially mark a spot on a display screen where the radar cop is sitting
^your idea would be pretty cool but i can anticipate missing a cop right up the road since your unit was busy downloading cop locations in california 12/28/2007 4:51:25 PM |

Not really a valid concern. First, algorithms like this are already use in real radar applications. The algorithms are designed so that local data gets combined with remote data if it is available. Otherwise, you default to local detection data. Second, computer technology can easily handle doing multiple things at once.
I would say that privacy and security is the biggest concern with this kind of system. Such a system could theoretically record your driving habits, and you wouldn't want pigs subpoenaing that shit. Also, people could fuck with the system by submitting false data to the server.
