lets say a person found my ip address...what is the most that they can find out about me? 2/7/2007 10:29:28 PM |

your internet provider and the general area that you are in. they can't get your name. they can't get your address, they can't get any personal info just by knowing your IP address.
hell, if I get into an AIM conversation with you I can get your IP address. Every website you go to keeps a log of your IP address. It's not your SSN, it's not a big deal.

the only information a person could get from an email would be an ip address, right? (saying the email address is not in my name, but was accessed from my computer) 2/7/2007 10:32:18 PM |

Not much from the IP itself, but the IP address is his route to your PC. How secure is your computer? Do you have a hardware firewall in front of it?

You sure about that? I don't think you're going to get an IP address unless you convince them to direct connect with you to share a file or something.2/8/2007 12:37:14 AM |

Yeah unless you direct connect or send/receive a file the only ip you see is the aol oscar servers and whatnot. 2/8/2007 12:47:26 AM |

unplug your modem for a few minutes/hours. when you plug it in again it should pull a new ip. if it does not, try again. 2/8/2007 1:02:34 AM |

if youre directly connected to a cable modem, you might be able to get a new IP address by opening up a command terminal and doing:
> ipconfig /release
then
> ipconfig /renew
...
at the worst, you'll just get the same IP address you were assigned previously. i dunno, ive never tried it at home. im behind a router so i cant try it without crawling under my desk and disconnecting a bunch of shit.
i am quite certain if you leave your cable modem unplugged for over a day (24 hours or more), when you replug it in you will get a new IP address. 2/8/2007 1:54:50 AM |

It won't. The cable modem holds the IP. The best way is to turn your cable modem off for 2+ hours. When you turn it back on, walla, new IP. It will most probably still be in subnet but different IP overall. 2/8/2007 7:08:29 AM |

easiest way. If your router supports it, change the mac address to something else. Then reboot your cable modem.2/8/2007 8:29:25 AM |

What are you talking about, "internet permanent"? Whether or not a new IP address is obtainable is related to implementation, and in many situations is absolutely changeable.2/9/2007 9:44:43 AM |

I hope I'm just deliriously tired and that your joking about that being what IP stands for...
I'm going to assume so and go on with my day with good faith in people
