Figure this will be a good place for simple questions to be answered without making a lot of worthless threads.

Ill start with a question about Radar detectors. When you get a laser alert, does that mean that its detecting a laser gun up ahead from the cop clocking other cars, or does that mean a laser just clocked your car and its too late?

I think it could go either way, usually the lazer is "instant on" so you dont pick it up much, but when you do chances are its you cuz your he can tell your speeding. Thats how ive gotten my tickets.

bingo. a laser is such a narrow beam that it can't be picked up unless it gets you or possibly the car next to you.

So

if turbos get such great power, why don't all car manufacturers use them?

and, why do some car manufacturers seem to swear by them (Audi, Saab) while others NEVER seem to use them (Chrysler, BMW)

dude, seriously. i hope you aren't serious. the compression ratios on a diesel are something crazy and they're designed strong enough to handle it and a lot more... regular gasoline engines simply aren't

diesel engines dont mix fuel and air the same way gas engines do. on a gas engine the fuel/air mix is already in the cylinder before the compression stroke, thus decreasing the amount of compression before the fuel ignites on its own causing some lovely knocking.

diesels compress only air and thus a turbo allows the most air possible to be shoved into the cylinder at the intake stroke and can be compressed much more since air doesnt ignite due to heat/pressure


diesels are built heavier as mentioned before to handle the extra compression/whatever but believe me there is still plenty that goes wrong with em, big diesel or small car diesel it doesnt matter

The simplest way to think of an engine is a pump. The more air you can get into and out of the engine, the more fuel you can put in to get to s stoichiometric ratio, producing more power. On most gas passenger cars, turbos are not an ideal solution because of the time it takes to spool up, and the limited rpm range they are efficient in. Diesels on the other hand operate in a very low range of rpms, and you can feed as much air as possible at all times, because there is no throttle plate to block off the flow from the turbo. Diesels operate more on an explosion principal, you shove as much air as possible into the cylinder, and with a little fuel, you get a small explosion, a big shot of fuel you get a large explosion, which is why they need to be built heavier, to withstand the shock. When you add fuel to air at flashpoint it all ignites at once, where in a gas engine, when you ignite a fuel air mixture with a spark plug, the flame travels through the mixture throughout most of the power stroke, giving a slower, more even combustion.

^ and Honda...things are changing. I'm curious if Honda will expand the turbo usage past one SUV, and actually try a turbo'ed sports car.

I recently broke off my driver's side mirror. Is there any type of really good glue I can use to stick it back on? Duct tape doesn't seem to work that well and I'm too broke to just buy a new one.

I have a simple question. So, recently, someone broke into my truck at work and shattered the passenger side extended cab window just so they could steal a $45 pair of Nike's. Didn't take my cell phone, check book, head unit, or anything else.
Anyways, I found a replacement vent window for $35 and got it installed, but it is not tinted like the rest of the back. So, would a tint shop just tint one window for me? How much would it cost, you think?
Truck is a 94 Toyota pickup, btw.

If you carfax a car and it shows on there that there was a reported accident in new york and it shows the new york police report case number, is there anything i can do to get more information on this? who should I contact? is there a certain department in the NYPD that deals with this?
