buy buy baby
Although I just checked and they don't have a store in Raleigh. That's pretty much the best place to go to in MD. You can still order gift certificate and shop online .

babies r us has everything - they'll need a lot more than clothes for a newborn. Clothes are a crap gift because they grow out of them so quickly. 2/13/2007 9:29:10 PM |

BABIES R US
cant beat it. i know its kinda generic, but way better than that walmart crap. that place is a godsend to new parents.
check their Baby Registry. he and his wife probably registered for the stuff they need.
http://www.toysrus.com/registry/index.jsp
and don't give a gift certificate. thats kinda lame. pick something out. the stuff that was most meaningful to us was the stuff that we didnt use right away but came in handy a little later.
dont buy infant clothes. they'll likely have a shitton of little infant outfits. we had so many we didnt even use some of them. if you buy clothes, buy something hip for older baby like 6mo or 9mo old.
my reccommendations:
* - a cool outfit (unique) for 6mos old. theyll be really glad to have the larger stuff when they realize their 30-million infant outfits are all of a sudden too damn small. For instance, an NCSU Wolfpack outfit (like a "onesie") for a 6-month old. Someone got one for us with my wife's college on it and it got worn all the time.
* - any "Baby Einstein" video(s). get one that's marked 0-9 mos. "Baby Galileo" is the title of one that is really cool. it's got puppets and planets and spaceships and classical music. Our kid watched that damn thing over and over a hundred times or more before he was 1 year old. it was a sanity saver for us. I'd bundle him up in the battery powered swing (aka "the neglect-o-matic") set that video on, and get myself a half-hour to 45-minute break to do shit. Its also really rated well, as an educational video.
* - if you feel like putting out some $$, buy them the automatic swing. I think the best one ever is this one, the Ocean Wonders Aquarium Cradle Swing, for $99.00. we used that damn thing until he couldnt fit in it any more (about 1 year old). it was an absolute *LIFE SAVER*. for a while it was the only way he (and we) could get to sleep.

the problem is, it eats up some damn batteries. D Cells. The only thing I'd do different is buy some NiCad rechargables and a charger. 2/13/2007 11:26:32 PM |

Babies R Us then Target then Baby Gap in my opinion!
The only reason for Baby Gap is if ya want to get some over priced clothes that the kid will only wear once or twice! Babies R Us(BRU from here out ) has an awesome selection. If you go the clothes route buy Carter stuff n usually BRU has it on sell like buy one get one 50% off. I agree with the baby swing idea...we had a hand-me down from my cousin who I just sent it back to cuz she is preggers again n should be delivering any day now. My lil girl loved the swing. She also loved her jumpy thing we got her...FisherPirce JumperRoo I think! Diapers are an excellent choice cuz you really can never have too many! More than likely if the baby has already been born they have the bare essentails so you can buy them something extra that they didn't get that would be kinda like a luxury We got a target GC from one of my aunts and it bought countless boxes of diapers n wipes plus some good extras. I got my lil one some Baby Einstein vids too and some of her toys r made by them as well Anyways if ya want some more help actually picking something out let me know...my lil girl is now 14 months so she isn't too old for me to still be helpful...LMAO 2/14/2007 12:08:08 AM |

i haven't purchased anything from babies r us. it seems crazy overpriced and the selection is kinda bad.
of course, if that's the only store in their area, then ya gots no choice.
i preferred gift cards over people buying me crap i didn't want. cash is always great.
a good place for a diaper gift card is amazon. no tax, cheap shipping. they have crazy good deals on pampers/huggies (the only brands you should buy). they'll need a lot.
i get a lot of stuff from http://www.specialtybaby.com/ they have nice sales on a lot of stuff, such as strollers and car seats.
let me know if you want to get them/or they need a medella 'pump in style' breast pump.
baby gap has some of the best quality clothes (gift cards to here would be great), gymboree is ok too, carters you can get anywhere like walmart/target.
gift cards: baby gap for clothes. wal-mart/target for clothes and accessories.
and like a previous poster mentioned, infant clothes are useless unless they've had a premie.

fisher price has a new swing that uses a power cord and batteries. it came out months after we got our ocean wonders swing (at target for $60). i agree that it is a lifesaver. i've only gone through one set of batteries though. the rechargeable batteries are just AA's in a c or d shell.

i feel that the Baby Einstein videos are a waste of money. other kids might love them (or their parents make them love it), but for mine, he could care less. he'd rather interact with his environment or with people. that being said, i own a few and they are rarely used.2/14/2007 2:30:32 AM |

^ how old is your kid.
our kid didnt really start actively watching the videos until about 6 mos.
and educational research shows that the style of video enhances cognitive development.
but, its true, whats good for some doenst necessarily work for other. 2/14/2007 2:34:00 AM |

mine is 8 mos old.
we watch foreign language kids shows and pbs/nick a lot.
i give the videos a chance every now and again, but it's still hard to get him to stay still.
he's at the crusing/almost walking stage. 2/14/2007 3:23:14 AM |

ours is 2.5 yr. now.
his big thing is "Little Einsteins" on the Disney Channel. that cartoon rocks. and thomas train videos.
but yeah, kids are funny. some kids are crazy about one thing, some another. sometimes they love something one day and hate it the next.
lately we're trying to get him into playing musical instruments. all he wants to do is play with cars and trucks and trains. 2/14/2007 3:47:21 AM |

I have never found Babies R Us to be over priced...in fact when searching for our baby seat the few we were looking at all of them were the cheapest at Babies R us than anywhere else by more than just a couple bucks! And yes you can find Carter outfits at Target, WalMart and JC Penny but few have the buy one get one 50% off deal that BRU usually does! And as for diapers...PAMPERS all the way! I never had any luck with Huggies, Luvs or anyother brand for that matter...the poop and/or pee always found a way out of the others!!! 2/14/2007 4:33:54 AM |
