Can always rely on TWW for tech help!
I just bought a USB enclosure (Nexxtech) for my old desktop hard drive (Seagate 120 gb). After installing the hard drive in the enclosure properly, I plug it into my laptop, and.. NOTHING.
I cannot make my laptop (Lenovo z61m) recognize the USB drive. It makes the sound that it makes when you plug in a USB device, then 20 or so seconds later it makes the sound that it makes when you remove a USB device. It's kind of a mocking sound actually And the hard drive within the enclosure runs for about a minute every 10 minutes or so, but still nothing happens.
When I plugged it in the first time, I got the popup that said new hardware detected, but that's never come up again. I've tried everything, restarting, unplugging, etc., and nothing works.
Can someone help? 2/13/2007 10:47:59 PM |

are you sure you set the jumper(s) on the hdd right? if it was pulled from your desktop it would have been set master, I think the usb drive wants it to be slave
correct me if I'm wrong though 2/14/2007 12:33:12 AM |

I set it to master originally, because that's what the USB enclosure's instructions told me to do. I changed it to "cable select" and I still have the same problem.
(Someone else suggested that to me too - they asked "which one is the master and which one is the slave?" I said, how the hell am I supposed to know, do I look like Abraham Lincoln? )

Eh, it would not be a requirement, just a bonus.
Update - I've come to the conclusion that Circuit City just sold me a crap enclosure; I tried it on another laptop and I get the same problem. And it's unlikely that the drive went completely bad in the 3 minutes it took me to move it from the desktop to the laptop.
Back to Circuit City. :damnit:
