I am running into an error with playing .wmv file types. I had just formatted my pc. I recall this problem occurring the last time I had a fresh install but I fixed it somehow. About a year has passed and I cannot remember what I did to fix it. It only has issues with .wmv files, all other extensions work fine.
I am using Media Player Classic with the latest ffdshow. I attempted to use ZoomPlayer as well as adding the defilerpak codec pack for test purposes and still failed.
I tried searching through google but I did not find relevant info. 2/15/2007 1:12:23 PM |

No? I did not plan on using WMP at all. Furthermore, it is running WinXP Pro N, which from my understanding has WMP totally removed to be European Union compliant? 2/15/2007 2:26:10 PM |

WMP 10 requires windows validation I believe. just fyi. You should be able to download version 9 straight from their website. Try downloading the ACC codec pack. That has enough codecs to cover almost everything. 2/15/2007 6:08:37 PM |

Must I absolutely have some version of WMP installed in order to play .wmv files? I've been using MPC in the past as a replacement, which I have liked much better.
Also, I would like to avoid downloading any sort of "codec packs" if I can help it. I don't need lots of extras that I probably won't use. 2/16/2007 7:28:20 PM |

Ok, fixed.
I did not have the necessary codecs to play wmv files due to the absence of WMP. Evidently, the codecs for this aren't included in most codec packs because they should already be installed with Windows.
Thanks! Installing WMP will resolve this issue. However, I downloaded and installed "Windows Media Format Runtime 11" for to my liking.
