I need a little help on report 5, I'm not sure how to figure out h. I have q0 = 1, p0=1, q1 = .63, p1 = .37 I am not sure if those numbers are correct; that may be half of my problem.... The equation has h = 1(q1p0/q0-2q0q1); but if p0 =0 than the equation doesn't work. PLEASE HELP!!! 2/27/2007 6:23:17 PM |

i thought you said p0=1 not p0=0?
im not trying to give you the answer b/c i havent even looked at the hmwk yet but im just stating what you posted. If i look at it sometime this week and figure it out i'll get back to you

oops i meant p0 = 0, q0 = 1, (though Im not sure that is right), thanks for looking at it though...I have lab tomorrow so I will have to figure it out sometime tonight or go to office hrs tomorrow. 2/27/2007 6:40:42 PM |

If I'm not mistaken, I believe Dr. Gardner told us to assume that the initial p and q would both be .5 . With would actually make sense phenotypically if all you saw were the stubble flies (since it's dominant AND the recessive lethal).
I hope this is right though, I'm pretty sure she said that, but I would hate to be wrong and mess you up.

Good luck...I freakin loved this class but I will not attempt to help because it has been awhile since I took it and I wouldn't wanna make it wrong for ya! 2/27/2007 11:03:46 PM |

thanks...I think you are right about the .5 for both at the start...I did the practice problem and it worked that way. For the G1 population you just do number of that type divided by total right....nothing different because it is part of a recessive lethal group? 2/27/2007 11:03:59 PM |

ok, i hope this i sright
if you are talking about the q1, then you have to remember that the stubble allele flies are NOT sb/sb, they are sb/+. so if you want to calculate the allele frenquency of sb (q1), you can't do the total "# of stubble bristle flies" divided by the total number of flies that you counted. If you do that you are also counting the "+" allele. (If they are "stubbly" then their genotype is sb/+; so hypothetically if you counted 4 stubble flies, then you have 8 alleles-4"sb" and 4 "+".)
I hope this helps, its really clumbsy wording

yea i know it is late...still not getting it. if i have 63 stubble flies, 37 wilds for 100 total, then i would have 126 stubble alleles...but then what PS. im in Wed 12:25 lab 2/27/2007 11:36:48 PM |

^thats my lab too, i sit in the far corner table (i'm the only one without a partner)
ok, you mgiht want to make sure this is right with Dr. Gardner before you take my word for it...
stubble flies have the genotype sb/+ , because the sb is dominant and you cannot have sb/sb flies because they all die..... you have 63 stubble flies....that means 63 of your flies have sb/+, that's 63 'sb' alleles and 63 '+' alleles the wild types are (by default) the genotype +/+ you have 37 wild types meaning that you have 74 '+' alleles (since it's homozygous it's 37 +37)
so the total number of alleles should be 63("sb" alleles)+63("+" alleles)+74("+" alleles) so the # of stubble alleles / total alleles = q1
ok, that's a redundant step-by-step version, but it's the only way I can describe it

joie's explanation works out exactly the same as if you did (#stubble flies)/(2*total flies). 2/28/2007 4:55:48 AM |

well when you do the chi square tests it shows that eye loci segregates randomly..... yet all traits are linked 3/13/2007 10:03:32 PM |

so everything is x-linked and there is nothing autosomal? 3/14/2007 6:05:20 PM |

our class data is totally fucked.....doing the chi-square test with the eyes comes out to 7 which is a reject hypothesis. i think our class has really bad data 3/16/2007 2:15:50 AM |
