Dems Urge GOP to Halt Immigrant Prank

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2007/02/27/D8NIC2JO0.html

Quote :
"WASHINGTON (AP) -- National Democrats on Tuesday urged Republican Party chairman Mel Martinez to stop the independent College Republicans from holding "Catch an Illegal Immigrant" events around the country.
Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean and Ramona Martinez, chair of the Democratic National Committee's Hispanic caucus, sent a letter to the GOP chairman asking him to put a halt to the events.

"These despicable tactics have no place in our public discourse or on our college campuses," the letter said.

The game is a variation of hide and seek, with one player posing as an illegal immigrant and everyone else trying to find the person. The winner usually gets a prize.

Tracy Schmitt, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said "we find these activities both egregious and offensive and condemn them wholeheartedly." But she noted the College Republicans are independent of the RNC: "We do not control their activities."

Democrats sent a similar letter to chairman Martinez's predecessor Ken Mehlman in September last year, noting that College Republicans were holding similar "catch an illegal immigrant" events in Pennsylvania and Texas. The RNC condemned the activities at the time.

The DNC noted that the game was recently played at New York University and drew several hundred students. Students at other colleges also have played the game.

We should start playing here at NCSU. We actually might find a real illegal immigrant.

Watch out it might have a bomb on it that will explode if the bus goes under 35 MPH. Or even worse a suicide bommer.

Why would anyone be embarassed? Better yet, why would anyone be offended? HOW DARE YOU PLAY A GAME OF TAG THAT MAKES FUN OF CRIMINALS, WHAT NERVE

next thing you know somebody will sue a group of elementary school kids for playing freeze tag because it could be perceived as offensive to someone who is paralyzed

Out of curiosity, how do Dean and Martinez expect the GOP to stop these events? Are they not independant collections of students? Is this not a form of free speech? Certainly it isn't a crime. Under what pretenses does the GOP (or the DNC) have the authority to put a stop to any of this?

^^ok, let me try to answer your question since it was apparently directed at me
Quote :
"how would you know someone is an illegal immigrant?"

well one foolproof way would be to see someone coming over the border...other than that you would need to see if they have legal documentation that other people would, although that can be difficult since they could have forged IDs, etc

Quote :
"do you plan on going around tagging brown people till you find one?"

obviously not

Quote :
"or do you plan on asking everyone you see for id?"

why would I ask for id? police tend to do that at checkpoints, airports, etc

and wtf does this have to do with the thread in the first place? its some fucking college kids playing tag...OH NO THOSE INSENSITIVE PEOPLE

ps

Based on what the article says about the game, I'm not sure what's so offensive, but maybe they're leaving out something about the immigrant wearing a poncho, sombrero, and big fake mustache that separates and then cam eback together.

I find it ironic that the College Republicans are doing this while at the same time, conservative business interests seem to be the ones thwarting meaningful immigration reform in their drive to guarantee cheap labor for agriculture, construction etc.

Is what those repub kids doing any more offensive than the hate-filled bile that liberals are posting on blogs about the attack on Cheney's camp?

Quote :
"Better luck next time! (TDB)

Dr Evil escapes again ... damn. (truthtopower01)

So Cheney is personally responsible for the deaths of 14 innocent people ... and then he waddles off to lunch!! What a piece of sh--! (fantanfanny)

Jesus Christ and General Jackson too, can't the Taliban do anything right? They must know we would be so gratefull (sic) to them for such a remarkable achievement. (hankster2)

Hey, Thalia, lighten up. I, for one, don't wish Cheny (sic) had been killed. I wish he had been horribly maimed and had to spend the rest of his life hooked to a respirator. Feel better now? (raisarooney)

Let's see ... they're killing him over there so we don't have to kill him over here? (ncjohn)

And they missed!? Oh, Hell. Like Mamma used to say, I guess it's the thought that counts ... (Anachro1)

You can never find a competent suicide bomber when you need one. (Mark701)

It's wrong because it is offensive to latinos. Despite the fact that there are plenty of hard-working latinos who are here legally in this country, everyone assumes due to shit like this that every mexican with paint stained jeans or a mcdonalds work shirt is here illegally. doing shit like this just perpetuates hatred towards latinos in this country.

^^^^^^I have bursts of intolerance, but in general, I'm as tolerant and open-minded as they come.

And expecting people to tolerate Dick Cheney is wholly absurd.

Come right next time, EarthDogg.

I would have to know more about the game to have an opinion.

The generally idea sounds idiotic though, something I would expect of Republicans, but there's not enough info to say it's offensive (but this is also something to be expected from Republicans).

Looking more into this game, apparently the illegal immigrant just wears a bright orange shirt that says "Illegal Immigrant" and "Catch me if you can"...its not like he's wearing a sombrero and dressed as a mexician mariachi member.

See, the thing is use a story to create outrage, no matter what the details are

then, once the damage has been done, you can print a retraction or clarification on page 17 of the Sunday news when nobodys looking

For example: OMFG HYPOCRITE GORE MANSION USES 1.21 JIGGAWATTZ of 'LECTRICITY

Later: using all green energy credits

There's a difference from voicing opposition to policy and cheering on a terrorist attempt on the vice-president's life. I couldn't stand Al Gore as VP, but I never wanted him killed.

Those comments about Cheney were despicable, disgraceful and disgusting..and there is no excuse on earth that could justify them.
