depends what most of your friends are on.....
don't you already have names for all those anyway?

it's a moot point anyway. use an aggregator like trillian, gaim or AdiumX

Use Gaim - It's multi-platform, multi-protocol, and best of all, open source.

Trillian is the only multi-client aggregator that works with AIM file transfers.

kb, what features / functionality are you looking for in a client? The one I have work I have leaves a huge memory footprint, but can damn near do anything.

GAIM BLOWS, TRILLIAN BLOWS

Adium X is amazing for the Mac

Miranda is the best, hands down, in windows

GAIM has served me well for years now. Plus per gaim's site: "Adium uses libgaim, the backend to gaim and gaim-text behind a slick OS X native UI."

(but gaim 2.0 has been in beta forever, and is kinda sputtering, though really you don't need much more fuctionality anyways)

GAIM is mediocre at best on every platform. Unless you are running linux, there are MUCH better alternatives.

df and Quinn,

that is a good point. I have a setup that's amazing. I'll zip it up and post it for you guys.

Yeah if you have a setup that beats gaim, I'd give it a shot. I've heard good things about miranda other than the arduous setup to get it up to par.

Yea it took me about an hour to find the plugins I needed/wanted and configure them.

Basically my setup uses tabbed conversation windows, with auto-pop on a new message and I have it configured for AIM/Yahoo/MSN/GoogleTalk

It also does auto-login on start and a few other little things that dont come enabled out of the box.

http://www.snotmonkey.com/files/miranda_tabbed_im.zip

just unzip it to a folder and run, or you can unzip it over top of your existing Miranda install.

Miranda IM has my vote...

Good: no bloat (unless you pimp it out with plugins), skinnable, multi platform, and an online community that keeps coming up with new stuff every day it seems

Bad: AIM transfers (can't send, but can receive), no webcam support (last time I installed/checked was ~5 months ago)

Plugins that I like: Tipper, TweakMiranda, and LoadAvatars

Noen, are you using a plugin for the auto login? I thought all you had to was lock/unlock the specific protocols for it to work, but mine seems sporadic.

Think I'll stick with gaim, I use its file transfer to send and receive with some friends who have aim.

I found this tip to increase the font to increase font size of Gaim (or any other GTK app) under Windows
Quote :
"
The solution is to find your home directory (C:\Documents and Settings\username) and create a text file named .gtkrc-2.0 containing this:

style "win32-font" {
font_name = "tahoma 12"
}
class "*" style "win32-font"
"

^Except that it almost ALWAYS works for me. Depends on your router/firewall setup and also the other party's setup. I used to have that issue but not for a year or two now really, except with one of my friends.

Trillian has some massive problems doing file transfers to and from aim.

^ Yes, but it still works better than Gaim or Miranda. There is no perfect one. If you're not going to do file transfers, then I think Miranda is the best if you need AIM.

Otherwise, gtalk. But really I hate all the instant messengers. Everyone needs to go to one open protocol and make it easier for people to communicate. Then the clients can battle over interface and functionality.
