Anyone feel certain spots on campus is very unclear in communication to drivers of the parking policy and enforcement?
It just seems like there are hotspots for Transportation to milk cash. Spots that are almost draconian in its enforcement of policies to feel like it's a deterrent or a punitive measure to punish violators. One of these target may mean a thousand dollars a week in ticket revenues for the Transportation, at the same time if they had consistent policies or clear communication (a simple sign in some places) would reduce the violations significantly.
Like my personal example would be the "Driving lane" violation in the lot behind building C on Wolf Village, probably 20-30 vehicles get ticketed there every week because the enforcement time is up to midnight, whereas most ppl just assume that after 5pm enforcement stops. There are no signs up and people constantly park there and get ticketed.
I don't mean to suggest that all parking enforcement is bad. Just saying that some type of enforcement on campus are predatory in nature. 2/28/2007 3:32:50 PM |

Agreed. However, if there is a bit of confusion, you can communicate that to Transportation and they might be able to do something to make the enforcement times more visible/evident. I remember there was a student committee around a few years ago that handled stuff like this ... no idea if they are still around or how to get in contact with them.2/28/2007 5:20:41 PM |

as much open land the university has around centennial they should just create a rly big parking lot and let people park there for free. It is rediculous that they charge $230 to park at one of the commuter spots on centennial 2/28/2007 5:28:24 PM |

they tell you that it is illegal to park where there are no spots, it isnt difficult to find out what the rules are
that spot where people parallel park in that little lot is a prime spot for a collision, especially with all the fucks that whip around that corner at 30+ mph2/28/2007 5:39:04 PM |

hah. I think I know where you're talking about. Is it the little loop by the dumpsters behind B and C. I've just recently seen them start ticketing people who park up against the curb during the weekend. I came back on a Sunday and there were about 3 cars with tickets. There's nothing really there that says No Parking and nothing appears on the transportation site about it. I wouldn't want to park there anyways since I'd be afraid some idiot would hit my car. I guess it's just people too lazy to walk. 2/28/2007 5:46:07 PM |

The most fun is when you go in and contest the ticket. I got a ticket once on my car for not having a sticker in a C lot. Well I have a B sticker... they know my car has a B sticker... at the time it wasn't the kind you could peal off. I finally had it and said I wanted to speak to the supervisor about the issue and she finally came out... and I mean it took her fat ass a long time to, and she went out to the car and I made her explain to me how the hell someone could not see that.
The ticket was dropped but I'm sure my record has this nasty "screw him if you can" note on it. 2/28/2007 6:00:28 PM |

You guys are missing the point, it's not whether they get to keep the money or not.
You have to look at the stakeholders. Maybe they have a revenue target that they have to meet regardless of where the money goes to.
While in some areas they do have to put signs up because failure to do so will have people illegally parked in spots that would impede emergency vehicles in the case of a fire, medical emergency, etc.
In other less critical spots, they don't put signs up because the adverse impact is small and it increases revenue from ticketing. That's my theory.
I would think it would be a mission of Transportation to reduce overall violations, but that may be what they communicate through website, etc on the surface, but they also have these enforcements that I categorize as 'predatory' as they target spots that are not labeled with low risk, low adverse impact, and typically confuse drivers. 2/28/2007 8:14:40 PM |

I got a warning and two tickets in one day for "no permit" when my already expensive permit was sitting right there. Took 8 months to get my money back. (At the time you had to pay first, contest later. They must have been sued for that, because the stopped doing it.)
Got another one during a break when I was one of only 10 cars in the parking lot. Hundreds of wide open spaces. Eh, what the fuck ever.
That was about the same time that someone stole all their records. Sucked for anyone that had paid with a credit card. 3/1/2007 4:48:03 PM |

i have a DE permit (which is nice, because a. i'm a freshman, and b. i live at avent ferry, so i'm only supposed to have a F permit.. haha) and i got a $40 ticket once for parking in an RD space that was clearly not marked as such.
it's over on cates in front of that fenced in construction area near alexander/turlington.
there is a sign that says "RD" on it, but it is over to the EXTREME LEFT of the space (near the white line) and also has an arrow POINTING to the left. this would lead anyone with any sort of intelligence that this space is a DE space, whereas the space next to it is an RD space.
i had parked there for months with no problem, and then one day i get a ticket. wtf?
i went through their appeals process, and wrote this big long explanation, took pictures, everything. their decision? they reduced it to $20. WTF.
so basically, they're saying "yeah, you're right, but we still want you to pay."
that, my friends, is why we all hate ncsu transportation. 3/3/2007 11:50:58 AM |

While I think the original poster is an idiot . . . he does have a point about the driving lane violation in that little parking lot. For the number of people that park there, it wouldn't be difficult to paint "No Parking" on the curb and some diagonal lines right there. The reason for driving lane violations is because the vehicles supposedly hinder the flow of traffic, and obviously tickets are getting this point across since there are always people parked there. 3/3/2007 1:26:14 PM |

So they have to ticket that much more to keep revenues up
I got ticketed twice back in the day. Once where a bush had grown over the sign that said parking was enforced until midnight, the other was a bit more complicated. There were parking lines that were barely visible in the lot that ended with around 10 or so spots. People continued to park after those 10 spots because there was plenty of room and, like I said, the lines were barely visible. I park in an open "spot" between two cars somewhere in the middle, which turned out to be in an area where there really weren't spots.

That was my experience as well. All they will ever do is half the ticket amount.

If your case is that strong ask for a supervisor. If there is doubt, take it like a man/woman and pay the fine. Sucks ass. I screwed up a couple weeks ago. I parked in an until midnight to run in and get my full locker in the gym. Came back out... $40 fine. Not gonna fight it. My dumbass did it. Just gonna pay it and move on. 3/5/2007 8:39:28 AM |

I have been parking on campus for over 2 years now with no pass and I have yet to get a ticket. They key is to keep moving your vehicle inside the gates on campus. The parking enforcement people have a schedule that they like to do, just learn it. 3/5/2007 9:03:34 AM |

I wish they would make 2 hour parking on the street to maybe 2 hour and 15 minutes. It'd give a little more time to get out of that 2nd class and haul some ass to move your car. 3/5/2007 12:09:29 PM |
