...on Letterman tonight.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/02/28/mccain.running/index.html

Quote :
"WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Setting aside any doubt about his presidential aspirations, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona announced Wednesday he would seek the GOP presidential nomination.

McCain, who has had a presidential exploratory committee, made the declaration on the "Late Show with David Letterman," taped earlier Wednesday.

"We are going to formally announce it in early April," John Weaver, a top adviser to McCain, told CNN.

Weaver said the time and location will be announced at a later date."

Now if they will just give him the damn nomination.

agreed....and i feel the same way about giuliani. i liked him until the last presidential elections...he just coughed up republican talking points at every opportunity rather then doing what got him elected in the first place.

It's just too far enough to even begin to guess who the real front runners are going to be. We all know what could happen between now and primary time.

All candidates pander in order to get through the primaries. Unfortunately for McCain, the divide between libertarianesque Republicans and Christian conservatives is so wide that he looks like a hypocrite jumping back and forth to tell everybody what they want to hear.

Didn't McCain about a year ago publicly criticize Jerry Falwell for a few things then like 3 weeks later he did a speech at Liberty University?

^^ yeah, he called him an "agent of intolerance" and compared him to Louis Farrakhan, but I believe it was much more than 3 weeks before he made a speech at Liberty Univ.

^^He thinks Roe V Wade should be overturned, but he doesn't want to be the one to have to repeal it. What's so hard to understand about that?

I'm not saying he deserves to be president, but he deserves a little more respect than that. Air force pilot from 1958-1981, Congressman from 1983-1987, senator 1987-present. This man has spent almost his entire life serving our country. I'd much rather have him in office than some rich lawyer who spent one term as senator.

Good. I hope he gets through the primary but the far right is so nutty I'm sure he won't. He's the only Republican, as of now, that I'd vote for... unless McCain loses and Hillary wins the D primary, in which case I'd abstain.

I will give you his military service. That is something to be respected for.

... but the life of a congressman/senator is hardly serving one's country these days.

Not to mention 5 1/2 years as a POW which left him with permanent disabilities. As an interesting side note, the North Vietnamese offered to let him go because his father was the Commander of the Navy's Pacific Command, but he refused. Like everyone else, I'm not saying he deserves to be President, just that he's not a joke.

I had a lot of respect for him way back when because, although I disagreed with him on a lot of stuff, he seemed like he would keep it real. The past year or so, though...yeah. Fuck that.

I didn't vote for him, but I thought it was kinda messed up how they threw him under the bus. It is a lot easier to support a guy with an unblemished military record over Kerry though, so I'm not sure if Kerry's military background is a good analogy.

I guess its not technically on his record but I was referring to the claims made by his peers and commanders that he lied about his involvement in the war and made false accusations of war crimes. Could be bs, but it certainly doesn't strengthen his reputation as a military man.

John McCain needs to dust off his lightsaber.

He has a lot of enemies on the Dark Side to battle.

well, yeah, but that only gets you through the republican primary.

then do you choose a progressive democrat or a suckup to the religious right?

he's not going to get past the republican primary. he's pissed off too many republicans in the past. unless of course the field of republicans is really pathetic in '08.

I was pretty angry about it, actually. I didn't like how Kerry pretty much ran on the fact that he was a Vietnam vet . . . the whole "reporting for duty thing" was pathetic, but I definitely didn't appreciate the attacks on his service. Was it all he tried to make it out to be? Maybe, maybe not, it was definitely better than Bush's.

^^Dude, fleeing to Canada woulda been more honorable than what Bush did.

I'm not gonna harp on the fact that Bush was a punk ass rich kid because I'm a bit of a punk ass myself, but let's not pretend his "military service" was admirable in any way. That's offensive to the guys who actually did their part and made sacrifices.
