looking at ordering a board sometime in the next week or so. anyone have any recommendations? Expecting to pay around $100/deck for carving, downhill, around 40"? The design is preferable. Rayne makes a few similar, as does Lush (Samba) and Loaded (which would cost me around 170 for the deck alone). I am not partial to Sector Nines, Gravities and the like, but just am looking for an upgrade in deck. (Had two sector9s and not terribly impressed.

I've been really happy with my Comet deck.
http://www.cometskateboards.com/products/boards.php
Rode it really hard for a number of years with no problems. Lately I've been looking at the flexdex boards.
http://flexdex.com/flexdex-deck-only.html
They look like they are crazy strong.
And I suggest abec11 wheels. I got the 83mm ones and can roll over everything in and around campus. 2/28/2007 11:04:51 PM |

I have really enjoyed my landyachtz deck
i have their "Chief" model
its got a good amount of flex which is great for all the stuff i run over on campus
i also have some huge gumballs on it which is nice for around campus as well ( not so good for powersliding though) they are also extremely quiet which is fun 2/28/2007 11:11:02 PM |

I am purchasing some Randall trucks (unknown specs) and abec 11 70s or 75s to go with the board. Any concerns with it fitting a drop thru board? 3/1/2007 12:22:04 AM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
The boards you posted in the OP have Randall trucks. If I were in the market for a new deck I'd probably get the Drop Wedge. I like some concave and IMO the lower the better. Easier kicks. The big wheels (80+ mm) are good but as mentioned above, not the the best for sliding... they tend to bend axles.
I've got a set of randalls, if you need me to take any measurements I will.

I ride Loaded!! and would recommend
But my buddy has a landyachtz Evo, i think, and it rocks too. Both these companies make quality boards and it looks like the rest of those companies do too
I think most drop thru boards use either Randall 180s or Randall DH trucks (I recommend the 180s unless you are gonna be bombing mountains) 3/1/2007 2:04:44 PM |

I would love to get a loaded board, but unfortunatly i am not...loaded.
I did find the specs on the other components. Randal II 180mm Abec11 Flashbacks 70mm
Any other board options I should consider? Or places to purchase on the cheap? 3/1/2007 3:48:37 PM |

I'm interested in purchasing a longboard, but I've never actually had the pleasure of using one. What would be good to start with? 3/1/2007 5:27:16 PM |

Id say anywhere is a good start!
This was my starter board http://www.gearguys.com/900086.html
Learned all the basics on this board and it can mostly hang with more expensive boards;
I still ride mine every now and then. 3/1/2007 5:33:29 PM |

Silverfish has good reviews on a vareity of boards and gear. Silverfish also has a lot of information about the sport, techniques, etc. The longboard store has a decent selection to choose from.

i have abec 11 grippins and theyre really good, if you have a cut deck like those you should try the gumballs though, theyre supposed to be really good too (slightly bigger) randals are pretty commonplace for longboarding so i seriously doubt youll have any trouble with getting them in the dropthrough deck. if you dont want a loaded board im pretty sure youll be happy with either of those, although i think those have any flex if thats something you were looking for. 3/1/2007 10:22:00 PM |

Ok I dont know shit about skateboards and have been wondering something. What's the difference in the longboards and the regular ones? Why do you want one or the other? 3/2/2007 12:57:38 AM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
Keeping in mind skateboards evolved from little more than rollerskates mounted to 2x4s, 'regular' boards are designed for tricks and not so much the rolling around factor, hence they are generally light weight with tiny hard wheels, narrow track, and short length. Longboards, cruisers, etc have qualities that make them better for riding like large, soft wheels, flexy decks (although not always), relatively long wheel bases, and wider tracks. It breaks down more than that but basically if you want to do tricks and grind handrails and whatnot, you ride a short board. If you like carving down hills, sliding, cruising around like a cloud over rough pavement, etc, you ride a long board. 3/2/2007 1:28:36 AM |

I want a longboard because downhill cruising is all I do; I never had any really inclination to learn tricks. I just like coasting about, so I think a longboards more suited to what I like to do with my skateboard.3/2/2007 11:47:38 AM |

i used to think longboards were lame, but they roll so smooth, and cruising around can be fun sometimes.
you'll never see a longboarding video though. skateboarding on the other hand....

i personally like watching those videos somewhat...can't really get into all that going down dan allen and morill but centennial is a fun place to ride and there a few other nasty places around campus.
also, my first few boards were homemade but i ride flexdex now and its awesome, so durable and flexible you can really do anything on it. 3/4/2007 1:34:12 AM |

yea its mad fun, just some sketchy areas where its like almost blind and then a car....my and some friends really rode all over centennial a lot last semester, its fun....i've heard tons bout kaplan, have yet to attempt that one... 3/4/2007 1:42:01 AM |
dustm All American 14296 Posts user info edit post |
kaplan is fun; nice and long, and the cross streets provide flat areas in between the steep parts so you're not just headlong down a big ass hill in case you get going faster than you are comfortable. Theres also a very steep apartment complex driveway around there somewhere if you like sliding down impossible hills. 3/4/2007 4:16:49 AM |
bmdurham All American 2668 Posts user info edit post |
Merwin is a nice hill off of Kaplan. Less traffic but steeper on one side and a long ride that ends in a T intersection at the end. Fun if you have someone to drive you a quarter mile back to the top of the hills. 3/6/2007 1:31:45 PM |

when i was in elementary school, I bought a skateboard from target or somewhere so that I could laydown on it and go down hills. This would be before skateboards with the front that curled up. 3/6/2007 1:33:54 PM |

so i built my new deck, and its awesome. pretty stable at high speeds.
So today i took it around lake johnson to hit some of the longer hills there.
I got into a speedwobble and tried to ride it out. Needless to say I am bleeding from every appendage.
Pictures to come. 3/13/2007 6:40:31 PM |

I don't really get speed wobbles until around 25-30mph, as measured when holding on the back of a car. I really wouldn't want to fall going that fast. 3/13/2007 6:43:38 PM |
