I honestly don't think I could hate Lotus Notes any more than I do. Just a completely antiquated hunk of crap. 3/2/2007 9:27:08 AM |

^^ the only software that i have to use at work that I hate more than Lotus Notes is Adobe Framemaker. Talk about a POS. I think it was first made in about 1990, and they've been increasing the version number every couple years, without actually making any changes! 3/2/2007 3:23:52 PM |

^^ sure it is.
download and install, then migrate all your folders and settings to Thunderbird.
delete your Lotus/Outlook shortcuts and never go there again.
if your IT guy bitches about it, tell him i said STFU 3/2/2007 7:57:59 PM |

thunderbird would work if your administrator has imap or pop3 enabled. Since Notes doesn't use these by default, most admins wont turn on pop3/imap unless there's significant demand.
Also, thunderbird wont do any of the database stuff. Which is the real reason to use notes.
Although if you have the full version of outlook 2003 you can install a Lotus Notes connector which will use the local Notes libraries to connect outlook to the domino server, even if pop3/imap aren't installed. 3/3/2007 7:20:41 AM |

okay, im not a network admin guy by any means.
but when i showed up on day one of my current job, lotus notes was the email client on my machine.
when i showed up on day two, i got busy installing thunderbird.
but yea, i guess we did have POP enabled. 3/3/2007 4:16:36 PM |

the only thing more fun than Lotus Notes on Windows is Lotus Notes on Linux
it's not just unpredictably slow, half of the time when it's done being busy it turns out to have actually crashed, but only sort of. no, it can't even give you the closure of a good, clean segfault-- something dies inside but the widgets keep widgeting and eventually you have to make the assumption that it probably isn't coming back.

I'm not defending Lotus Notes but I've done some Domino development... once you get past the bad points of Domino (and being forced to develop on domino servers because we already have the infrastructure) there are actually some pretty neat things about Notes. I would rather develop .NET shit, but being forced, it's not all that bad to develop in a Domino environment. 3/5/2007 10:10:10 PM |

I've been using Notes for a month now, and it's really not that bad.
It is a little slow, but that could be from my hand-me-down laptop.
We're all getting new Lenovo's in a month though. 3/7/2007 9:18:20 AM |

The only thing that I've seen that actually helps load times is superfetch in vista.
Notes as just email is kinda dumb. Exchange/outlook is alot less of a pain in the ass. Notes apps are where it shines. Development time for simple apps in Notes is a fraction of what it is in something like sharepoint.
The real problem with notes is they've kept is so backwards compatable that you'll have bugs from R3 or R4 pop up in R7. It also seems like it has just picked up so much clutter going from version to version (like id files). Hopefully alot of this will change in 8. 3/7/2007 11:16:04 AM |

We use lotus notes at are work
I dont like hte interface, but its okay considering some of the people around here have 10gb mail files.
Were supposed to switch to outlook, which means that all these people who have quickplace and some lotus notes databases will be SOL, so well have to run side by side, furhter slowing things down.
Itll be just like 123, some punks sill insist on sending out 123 documents, NOBODY CAN READ.
