skybluesky, coming out in a couple months.
being streamed right now on their webpage, wilcoworld.net
very good, some of the great new concert songs from last tour are on it - walkin "maybe the sun will shine" - has been named "either way" on and on and on

yhft was a good album, although i only really listen to 'i am trying to break your heart' and a few others off of it. summerteeth however is phenonmenal. also no one can say fuck wilco who has seen them live.

Not a fan of Wilco.
That said, Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo are a couple of my favorites. IMO, both kick the hell out of Wilco 3/4/2007 7:20:33 PM |

I've only heard three songs off this so far:
1.) The first song (Either Way) is a little too "adult contemporay" for my tastes. I think it'd be better without the boring drum beat.
2.) I love the second song (You Are My Face)-- gives me some hope for the rest of the album.
3.) Walken does absolutely nothing for me... I didn't like it the two times I heard it live, and I don't like the album version any more. 3/4/2007 11:12:29 PM |

wilco is one band that i believe has gotten progressively better with each album. "a ghost is born" is pure bliss for me. i'll definitely have to check this one out. 3/4/2007 11:47:59 PM |

burned a copy of this, drove an hour home for dinner, and an hour back and listened to the whole thing both ways.
"You are my face" has that great tweedy-on-ghost, neil young type guitar solo - choppy and kinda angry. "hate it here" is fantastic, and impossible germany has great nels guitaring walken>what light>on and on and on is a really strong ending to the whole record.
nels is gonna absolutely shred some of these songs live.
also, fuck the haters. You can like uncle tupelo all you want and, yep, tweedy is a prima donna whiny douche, but his collective discography (UT and Wilco) stands as one of the finest bodies of work since the start of the 1990s, and still continues here. AND he allows taping. every wilco album gets better with each listen. I'm positive that this one will, too. I think it feels a lot like it would have fit between Being there and summerteeth
The big question is this: Why the hell is it spelled "walken"? Wasn't spelling kamera with a k enough?

I'm really glad someone else picked up on this also. His drumming has always been so solid. He's really in a league of his own. But, on this album, the drums just sound stale and under-utilized. The comparison to a casio is spot-on... particularly the first song. It's the same exact boring beat the entire song.

seriously
listening to the opening tracks of the three albums he's been a part of is a good comparison
he went from explosive and inovative to something probably written by one of tweedy's kids3/8/2007 6:02:09 PM |

Case in point, the drowsy opener "Either Way" sleepwalks through a list of indecisive sentiments ("maybe you love me, maybe you don't") before breaking for a Cline solo that's straight-up Weather Channel Local on the 8s." |

I've never really enjoyed Wilco much (or much of their alt-country stuff) but I did like Impossible Germany and On On On... mostly for that vintage 70s sound they captured on those tracks. 2/28/2008 11:54:28 AM |

i started this thread, and defended this album when it leaked.
and I was drinking my own wilco kool-aid. This album sucks, and despite that fact, I was pumped about going to stay with friends in Charleston to see them tomorrow night.
and then they cancelled the fucking show to do SNL. ditching a sold-out concert to do SNL *feels* like selling out. i'm not yet sure if it is.
between that, VW commercials, how much SBS sucks, how much the music world seems to love it, and how tweedy acts on both "i am trying to break your heart" and in "Man in the Sand"... I'm fucking done with this band 2/28/2008 12:56:34 PM |
khcadwal All American 35165 Posts user info edit post |
^ i could never be done with this band. but only maybe because they are one of my favorite bands ever, and that is hard to give up no matter how much they sell out. and yes, ditching a sold out concert for SNL is pretty much selling out (imo).
i don't think skybluesky is GREAT (especially compared to their other albums) but it isn't THAT bad. i think it gets more hate than it deserves. a couple of songs are good. the whole thing is listenable (with the exception of 1 or 2 just really terrible tracks). but yes, not their best showing. not their best at all (but hey shit happens right).
finally i think part of my love for wilco comes from seeing them live. i just had a really really really amazing time at their show. it was after a ghost is born, so most stuff played was from yankee hotel and a ghost. although they did play some off of summerteeth which is one of my fav albums of all time (i don't know why, i just looove it). the show was great. however, i'm not sure if i'd enjoy a show that was dominated by skybluesky anyway...seems like it'd be really boring.
to summarize, yes i'd be pissed if i was supposed to go see them in charleston and they cancelled. because one that is dumb. and two charleston is fun. and three it probably would have been a good show despite skybluesky
ok i lied i wasn't done. i don't care about the VW commercials as much. i found it more annoying (and sell outish) that the flaming lips lent one of their songs to a dell commercial. DELL? esp how much the flaming lips rant about politics at their shows, it seems like they'd have a disdain for corporate america. but i guess a lot of dolla dolla bills y'all can change anyones mind.
