some eureka bagless piece of shit from target. cost like 90 bucks and has 70 attachments. I let my wife talk me into it. It gets constantly clogged up with dog hair and just generally sucks. It also weighs about 30 pounds so its a pain in the ass to lug around the house.


If I had to do it again, I would pony up the money for an oreck or something like it that is light weight and simple and just works. I am interested in seeing some of the responses to this thread, though, as I will probably be purchasing a new one soon.

we have a dyson. paid a friend $250 for it cause they were moving to england. we love it. it's awesome on pet hair and doesn't get clogged (like they claim). only problem so far is the brush getting filled with carpet fibers (new carpet sheds a lot)

I purchased the Kenmore Progressive canister after 2 months of looking at different brands. I had the kenmore magic blue for about 2 years. The floor attachment broke on my magic blue and the carpet attachment was not cutting it on my hardwoods.

I was heavily considering the Dyson or a Rainbow until Consumer Reports issued their latest issue and scored those as ok. I went with the Kenmore because of the rating, price (reg. $299, on sale for $230) and I really wanted a canister. Hoover has a great canister as well, but I could not find it in a store to "try out".

I have LOVED it so far. The head of the vac is a little bulky, but the floor tool attachment gets under a lot of places. It has a power attachment that we have used in the cars and on the mattress. I also run around barefoot and have noticed a huge difference in my floors.

I also recommend getting a bag vac. Bagless create a lot of dust if you empty it in the house. I did not want the hassel of having to go outside to empty the canister.

I feel really old now.

Oreck - these things are workhorses and light to boot. I've had the one for about 5 years with no problems ever. They are at least $300, but worth every penny

I too have some bagless piece of shit. Except I got mine for $40 at K-Mart (the step below Wal-Mart). I'm not sure if it actually does anything except make nice lines in the carpet and belch dust and soot into the air. I suspect it fluffs the carpet up just enough so that all the sand I track in falls below the surface so I can't feel it.

i hate hate upright vacuums. they never work as well as canisters.

i have a hoover windtunnel. it was around $250 when i got it 5 years ago. it's a pretty good vacuum. haven't had any problems with it and i can find hte bags almost anywhere. i have a long haired dog that sheds a lot and 3 cats.

got a dyson about a year ago. unlike the last three vacuum cleaners that only lasted a year, this one seems like it'll last longer.

that and it picks up dirt and dog hair better than the previous ones. Looks like there are some new models that are as good or better than the dysons for cheaper, but hopefully we won't be needing a new one for several years.

yup, I have a kenmore upright I bought about 3 years ago. I love it, especially the rotary brush attachment for pet hair on couches and stuff. Before that I had a dirtdevil that I hated because it made so much dust when you tried to clean it.
The attachment brush did get stuck, but I figured out how to clean it (remove 2 screws, take apart the brush, clean off the hair that gets stuck in the spindle and keeps it from rotating).

oh yeah, and it was about $300, but worth it.

I have an Oreck XL and a Hoover. I bought the Hoover because it had a Hepa filter and attachments. The 8lbs Oreck is the bomb though.

I have a central vacuum with like a 30-foot hose. It has an air-powered rotating brush attachment that works surprisingly well on carpets. I can't say how it does with animal hair since we don't have any, but I would imagine it does a good job.

Kenmore upright that I found in a dumpster at Chapel Hill when my sister moved out of her apartment last summer. Just disassmbled some of the main pieces, soaked them in Oxi Clean, and got a new bag. Works pretty good. Price was right.

I've got a Bissell Powerforce bagless, it works pretty well. Picks up more doghair than I care to think about. I bought it when I moved into my current apt. so it's only been used about half a dozen times, but so far so good.

I haven't experienced any of this - the only carpet fibers that the dyson picks up are those that my cats pulled out when they use the carpet as a scratching post (and subsequently piss me off).

if you look it up in google and read the first handful of links, the general consensus says that canisters are better sealed than uprights and leak less dust (better for allergies), canisters have low profile heads so you can vacuum under furniture w/o moving it, have lots of different attachments, and a long hose. since the motor and what not doesn't have to fit onto the part you push around, the motor is more often more powerful (bigger) in a canister than an upright. the cord also retracts into the unit.

some uprights have hoses, but they're not as long as canisters. you also have to push the entire weight of hte upright around as you vacuum (w/ a canister you just push the head, then pull the canister part around behind you). also if the head unit breaks, you can't use the vacuum til it's fixed (w/ a canister you just swap out for another attachment until you get another).

basically, they said there were more pluses for canisters than uprights, but it's all about what you're used to...if you grew up w/ a canister, you're not going to like an upright, and visa versa.

i like having a canister for most vacuuming, then a small upright (like a dustbuster on a stick basically) for quick touch-ups.
