Does anybody know of any programs (preferably free) that allow you to map a remote SCP or SFTP server as a drive in Windows? 3/9/2007 8:47:26 PM |

Quote : | "Open an explorer window, it doesn´t really matter which one. You can do this by opening a folder on your hard drives for example. Select Tools and Map Network Drives from the Menu. If you want the ftp to be available everytime you log into windows select reconnect at logon, otherwise uncheck the box. Click on “Sign up for online storage or connect to a network server”, this will lead to the Ad Network Place Wizard setup. Hit next and wait until you can select Choose another network connection from the list that is displayed.
Click Next after choosing the entry and enter the ftp in the form field that appears. For example ftp://www.example.com/. Uncheck Log on Anonymously in the next screen and provide the login details to your ftp. First the username, then a name for the connection and finally the password that appears in the Log on As window at the end.
Select Log on and the contents of the ftp will be shown under the drive letter that you specified at the beginning." |

windows doesn't do SFTP, just FTP (unless you get a seperate program). NCSU turned off their FTP stuff for unity spaces i think, because SFTP is more secure. are you trying to access NCSU stuff? 3/9/2007 11:06:50 PM |

I know VT uses WebDrive, which supports SFTP. Haven't used it in awhile, so can't tell you pros/cons of it. 3/10/2007 5:21:57 AM |

I want this as a substitute for Wolfcall on Vista until we get AFS/Kerberos working on Vista.
FTP is a no go because it sends you password in plain text. 3/10/2007 10:34:47 AM |

just get a free sftp client and forget the whole drive mapping business 3/10/2007 11:14:24 AM |

^ That will work for technical folks, but not customers who need things as plain/transparent as possible. Anything more sophisticated than Windows Explorer / My Computer (on a guess) is too complicated. 3/10/2007 12:32:26 PM |

There's that, but also the issue of being able to directly work on files in AFS. I guess I'll just have to get AFS working in Vista. Anybody know the details of how to setup AFS and KFW without the help of Wolfcall? 3/10/2007 7:35:27 PM |

^ Right now, there are people talking with ITD about how to make it work, but so far, we haven't found any solutions that actually work (to my knowledge).
I'm sure we'll make some kind of announcement when we figure out how to make AFS and kerberos work in Windows Vista for this purpose. 3/10/2007 10:08:16 PM |

n/m, I got AFS working on Vista.
Yea, there is a lot of talk about whether to continue moving Wolfcall forward or to use the Identity Manager now in MIT KFW or a simply scripted solution.
