I got a new laptop last month... HP running windows vista

everytime i close the lid, the wireless disconnects.. i come back an hour or 2 later and the wireless has disconnectted and everything else (including AIM) has closed, obviously

I checked all the power settings, everything that i can find and can't figure it out.

When I close the lid, it does not sleep, hibernate, or anything...i turned those settings off...however the wireless still disconnects

is there some sort of option/feature i am missing? How can i close the lid and keep the wireless from disconnecting/

Are you sure its the lid closing? What happens when you close it and immediately reopen? And Vista in general has power saving mode enabled by default (at least in Business / Premium). It could be a driver setting somewhere on your wireless card you need to disable ... something to the effect of "disable power saving mode".

I was about to mention that same thing...

My laptop before messing up recently would do the same thing, and i looked at my power settings and it was fixed.

haven't installed Vista yet, but at least in WinXP you can go to the Control Panel > System > Device Manager section, scroll to the wireless network adapter, right-click and select "Properties" -- at least for my Intel card, the power setting features are in there

on laptops there is a setting that says 'when i close the laptop (something like that) then gives you options - click the one that says 'do nothing' (this is on xp but im sure its similar on vista)

some laptops just do this, my Dell with friggin' Gentoo on it drops the wireless when I close the lid, and I am pretty damn sure I haven't set it up to do that, so I'm assuming it's some BIOS voodoo that isn't worth screwing with in my case

if your laptop is doing what mine does (it's an Asus, but it's probably behaving similarly) then it's going into hibernation whenever you close the lid, that's what shuts off the wireless and all the connections.

I honestly don't know a single laptop i've handled that doesn't do this. But there's probably some way to change it in your power settings so that the laptop doesn't go into hibernation.

this is how i did mine (i dont know what it is if this doesnt work):
right click on desktop>properties
click on the screen saver tab
click on the button that says 'power'
click on the tab that says advanced
look for the section titled 'power buttons' should have a drop down list under 'when i close the lid of my portable computer:'>select do nothing

i can just close my computer with programs/internet running, and when i open it back up its still running fine - the only thing that happens when you close the screen is that the screen goes blank (like the screensaver)

^^ that's windows... does hp have any additional powersaver tools? i've actually got two of them on this laptop, an asus set and the windows set, i never use the windows ones, prefering the asus program.
