if you get help from anyone other than the prof or TA it is considered cheating. HOWEVER, if you get help from someone outside of the class and that person doesn't help anyone else...i imagine that it would be very difficult to get caught. But that doesn't mean its something you should do...

dude isn't asking for someone to write his programs, he wants a tutor.

^ where is it written that someone cant get tutoring from someone. if I was a java guru, i could tutor someone on how to write java without actually writing their code.

this is retarded. Java has the most open API possible. there are endless tutorials on the web. you cant prohibit someone from asking a question, just on the basis that the person answering the question isnt a professor or department-sanctioned TA.

I'm sick and fucking tired of people telling people who they can and can not get help from. This is particularly the case in CSC. Those fucks are so freaking uptight about someone cheating that they have completely lost touch with the fact that perhaps some people need help outside of class.

I found it most difficult to get help when i was in school because all the TAs for java were underqualified or either too up their own ass to actually sit down and tell you how to do something.

Java professors give a high level overview of concepts and offer little help when it comes to someones actual program.


I think people need to keep in mind that this is college and learning is the most important thing and I will help anyone who actually needs help. So if you do, hit me up.

I'd prefer to see people who need tutoring fail. If java is hard and you can't pick it from available literature, the rest of it is not going to get easier.

I think its funny to see the same arguments repeat themselves on TWW every ... 3 months? Meh, if you want tutoring, it doesn't hurt to inquire about it. I personally can't justify $10-$20/hr when help is offered for free.

I don't know why someone would pay for a tutor when there are tons of TA's sitting around. The only time anyone ever shows is right before the programs are due anyway :/ I get so much hw done in office hours.

Who says they will ever use java again in their life? It is a req for so many majors. I'm CSC and I had never had coding experience before coming here as an EEU, and I couldn't just 'pick it up' without getting it explained to me a couple of ways before it made sense. Truth is, most of the Java 1 and 2 teachers when I was coming up were like robots and the TAs weren't really any better.

yeah, they basically just spewed out concepts and expected you to immediately know the stuff. Luckily I had a decent TA for 116 and my suitemate was a TA for 216 when I took it.

Most of the 116 TAs cannot speak coherently so I can understand someone wanting to pay for tutoring.

^ and oftentimes ppl don't want to go back to campus to hunt down a TA and get help in a lab where you can't bring your own drink or food... ppl will pay so they can get help at home or another's where they can have access to some conveniences and be able to speak with someone they can understand... some TA's are a little uppity too...

that said, that isn't all TA's either, I've had a couple of very good ones

and for whoever wishes failure on ppl who seek help... that's pathetic. not everybody gets something the same way, and they need help, don't be a jerk about it
