"A Team Gains Strength From Its Weakened Coach

RALEIGH, N.C., March 17 — Already, it was going to be an arduous week for Kay Yow, the Hall of Fame women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State: Blood work for a tumor cell count on Monday. Chemotherapy for Stage 4 breast cancer on Wednesday. An opening-round game in the N.C.A.A. tournament on Sunday.

Yow with her players as the pairings for the N.C.A.A. tournament were announced last Monday. North Carolina State players will wear sneakers honoring Yow.

Then her cellphone rang at 10:40 Monday morning. The North Carolina State fight song played jauntily as the ring tone, but the call had nothing to do with basketball.

Yow put her hand to her mouth and turned to a visitor in her living room.

“My daddy passed away,” she said."

Not married, just lives for NCSU bball. Hopefully the chicks can do something on the court for her because it doesn't sound like she will be here long.

Quote :
" If the games were not carried on television or streaming video, she listened on the radio, taking pages of notes. She grew impatient when the announcers read the statistics haphazardly or forgot to mention offensive rebounds. During the holiday break, the student radio station failed to broadcast the start of two games, until Yow started making phone calls.

“They were playing that punk music,” she said. “Twice I had to go sort of crazy.”

WKNC got owned by Yow

Double post for the great quote it ends with

“I want you to remember to have great strength and have great courage. There can always be a little bit of fear or nervousness, but courage overcomes that. Your desire to win, to be the best you can be, becomes greater than anything you fear. That’s courage. That’s how you do it.”

Well, we've made it to the second round, so everyone's got another chance to show their support of Coach Yow.

^^^I hope they were just clueless to the situation...I cant believe anyone would be that classless.

I wasnt in town Sunday, but Im going to have to make the effort to get out there Tuesday, although Im a little annoyed that the new start time is going to give us a decent chunk of overlap with the mens game. I guess I need to find that small radio.

I don't know how women's ncaa scheduling works, but this could be Yow's last game in Raleigh. If you can go, you should.

It's 16$ at 7pm at RBC on Tuesday (this actually gets you two games -- you can watch that Duke she-beast beat up on someone at 5pm).

Women's basketball is awful, but you gotta respect someone who gave most of her life to wolfpack basketball.

in the print version of this article there was a WONDERFUL picture of coach yow crouched over in a lazy boy poring over some sort of paper in what i imagine is some sort of cancer center, with a birthday balloon next to her, hooked up to some sort of machine.

As part of the Colonial fans in attendance at the game I would like to clear up the misunderstanding about the smattering of boos for it was not a classless act, but rather an act of unawareness. Once the couple of uninformed fans learned of the situation they quickly joined the rest of us in the ovation for coach Yow. "

That should be remembered along with ANY of the Jimmy V quotes we know off the tops of our heads.
