I would like to run some wire in my condo for a LAN, coax, and surround sound. I bought the condo already built, so there was no time to run wire before they drywalled.
I want coax and LAN in my bathroom and kitchen. And I just need to run wires in the living room.
What's my best option here? I know I can cut holes in the drywall every other section and drill to run the wires. I could run the wires up and through the crown molding. I could run the wires down and behind the baseboard. Any other ideas? 3/19/2007 2:29:23 PM |

I would either run all the wire through the attic or crawlspace. You can then drill through the sole pates or the top plates and run the wires up through the wallspace. Cut a hole in the drywall for the mounting box, fish out the wire(s), mount the box, fit you faceplates, and you're done. 3/19/2007 3:19:06 PM |

haha... it's not THAT bad. I have a DVR setup and will be sharing the shows on share drive and might want to put a PC in the bathroom or kitchen to utilize this.

^not a pro... but I know it does suck
I don't want to deal with wireless speeds and connection problems if I don't have to. Especially if I do get back into gaming (work is taking over ). So yeah, I do know about wireless. I also know about wireless TV, but I want to be able to watch HDTV, not just standard.

yeah... I heard there's usually enough space under the lower piece of drywall behind the baseboard (because they're not supposed to put it all the way to the bottom otherwise it might be able to soak up moisture).

I'll look into that for interior walls. But either way... I'll still run wire for at least hanging the LCD tv and running speaker wire for surround.3/19/2007 6:23:28 PM |

I was going to say attic/crawlspace if you have it. I also know someone who ran it along ventilation. 3/19/2007 7:08:17 PM |

the best bet is to run thru the walls, but since you can't easily do this, look for some wire molding
it's not the best, but it's way better than running wires under carpet or any of that other bs
Wiremold is one brand, but there are many options 3/19/2007 8:12:17 PM |

I see what you're saying. I am starting to think that running through the crown molding might be a good idea. Crown molding is already up in the living room, but if I put it in the bedroom and add it to the kitchen... I could run coax and cat5 in there no problem. 3/19/2007 10:09:46 PM |

the baseboard easily comes off...its only nailed in...all you need to do is pop that off tuck the wires between the wall and the carpet and then nail the board back on
you may need someone to do that though for you. or try a small spot first like between two doors or in a corner next to a door.
thats the only way I did it with my surround 3/19/2007 10:36:21 PM |

i was able to run mine by pulling up the carpet and running the wires around the edge of it and underneath the baseboard. didn't even have to pull off the baseboard. 3/19/2007 10:50:20 PM |

when i had my surround sound put in they used an adhesive runner that covers the wire and follows the baseboard
it actually looks really good
btw, i just spent all night putting in dimmer switches 3/19/2007 11:02:55 PM |
