So they are either going to turn it into office buildings or a park basically.
I hope everybody will support it as becoming a park. It will improve NCSU dramatically and give students something decent to do in Raleigh. They are probably gonna attach it onto Pullen Park and part of NCSU. Either it's going to be a new part of NCSU or a bunch of shitty offices.
Remember NCSU is ranked as one of the ugliest campuses in america right now, which Dix Park can improve.

I mean, having a park is cool and all
but I'm kinda torn on this
the city could make some profit and releive some tax burden on the taxpayers also (not that they will)
and it's not like people are flocking to any of the other parks around here 3/19/2007 5:21:09 PM |

but a park like this could give something raleigh to be proud of. we don't have much right now.
in 20 years, when you say you went to NC Sate, it will make you look a hell of alot better because this can improve NCSU's image and quality.
also a great quote from that article:
In 100 years, not one of our grandchildren will look at us and say, "I'm sure glad you decided to sell off what used to be 306 acres of open space. Who needs all those trees?"
Think of the kids who would grow up in an increasingly crappy Raleigh in the future. Is it better to get $50 from a tax break or do something people will remember? 3/19/2007 5:27:36 PM |

I don't see your logic on it becoming part of NCSU...unless State buys it...

yeah, we don't have any parks.

There is plenty of space downtown for condos and high end homes. People are constanltly renovating and turning over properties there for a profit. This land is a one time oppertunity to preserve a huge green space that will be convenient to all of Raleigh. I say keep the park and let the development spread around it as it is already doing.
This is not some tree hugger/pork barrel project that will cost the city a ton of money, the State already owns the land. If people would like to develop condos around it they can purchase a city block and do so just as developers all along glenwood and boylan have. 3/19/2007 7:18:37 PM |

Agree 100%. This is more about what Raleigh will be like 100 years from now than it is Raleigh today. At slightly more than 1/3 the size, it will be Raleigh's version of Central Park in NYC.3/19/2007 10:08:37 PM |

how cool would it be if the land was indeed reserved as a park, and then it becomes our version of "central park" in like 20 years? that'd be awesome.
i guess i should've read the thread before posting.

This land could have generated a ton of tax revenue years ago.......it could generate exponentially more now.
The fact is that setting it aside for all to enjoy has driven up the quality of life for all residents of the city and at the same time positvely affected property values surrounding it. That tax revenue goes in to the coffers of NYC year after year.
Quote : | "History
by Elizabeth Blackmar and Roy Rosenzweig (please see full credit at the end of this section)
Central Park was the first landscaped public park in the United States. Advocates of creating the park--primarily wealthy merchants and landowners--admired the public grounds of London and Paris and urged that New York needed a comparable facility to establish its international reputation. A public park, they argued, would offer their own families an attractive setting for carriage rides and provide working-class New Yorkers with a healthy alternative to the saloon. After three years of debate over the park site and cost, in 1853 the state legislature authorized the City of New York to use the power of eminent domain to acquire more than 700 acres of land in the center of Manhattan." |
Quote : | "No single individual either conceived or carried through the massive public project that, in the end, cost more than $10 million (three times the city's total budget in 1850) and took more than eight hundred acres out of the most expensive and intensely competitive real estate market in the United States." |
Imagine if they had bitched out over ten million dollars back then.........a section of that land just large enough for a hotel would go for over ten million today. They sucked it up then, and as a result generation after generation have enjoyed visiting this landmark.]3/20/2007 12:44:13 AM |

Ha. I don't think they would give any relief. They would just look at it as more money they can now spend. Heck, they would probably raise the tax burden on the taxpayers and justify it by saying we need to pay for the infrastructure that will go around the surrounding office park.
Quote : | "a section of that land just large enough for a hotel would go for over ten million today." |
Yeah, but adjusted for inflation back to 1850... that'd be like $5

Impossible shit I want to see: I know that Raleigh could never support an MLB team but how cool would a stadium on top of the hill with the "skyline" in the background be?
Doable: I think a disc golf course is totally doable (probably what the mayor meant by "ultimate frisbee"). I think a ropes course would be cool. An observation tower. Maybe a small performing arts venue. Some nice gardens.
Doable but unlikely: I'd love an actual big indoor botanical garden. A small zoo would be badass like an aviary / autobon type of thing. Duke has Lemurs and shit right? A public skatepark would be a hit for younger people.

That, and the 6th or 7th hole that has the woods on the left. that one blows as well.
