Possible? Do they even allow 2 teams from one conference to be in a preseason tourney? does it count as a conference game if they meet?

[Edited on March 19, 2007 at 10:47 PM. Reason : if not at least have like a raleigh invitational. $$$$$]

Or invite a bunch of the UNC-Satellites (Greensboro, Wilmington, ECU, NCCU, etc) and have a local tourney

Might be a bit easy for us to win it, but it would make bank and I bet it'd make alot of local people happy

Only way it would work now would to be a "Dixie Classic Challenge".

Have the Big Four in it, but don't have them play one another (since it's against NCAA rules). Set it up similar to the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, invite four other top programs, and have the games in either one or two day timespan... better than nothing.

I say try to invite some of the best teams possible, but try to keep most within a days driving distance to get more fans of other schools to buy up tickets. Have 8 teams in a 3 day tournament like out in Maui, with ourselves being the host school. Get WVU, Tennessee, Purdue, Texas Tech, Memphis, Charlotte, Davidson, and host - N.C. State.

Speaking of Maui how in the hell did Arizona State get invited to next year's tournament out there? I thought Maui prided themselves on getting some of the best teams from each conference?

No if you brought back the Dixie Classic you have to play the games in Renyolds. I like the idea of 8 teams versus NCSU UNC Duke and WF, but that wouldn't happen and it wouldn't prove anything. I say get the 4 of us along wiht 4 other good teams and make the tourny a good one.

I thought previously of what a nice tournament a North Carolina State Cup would be like.

Think of the following bracket. It's setup so that teams that play each other twice in conference play could only meet in the final, to minimize the chance of the two playing a third time. So, for ACC teams, North Carolina and Wake Forest would meet in one semifinal and Duke and NC State would meet in the other semifinal if all ACC teams advanced. There's 19 North Carolina Division I teams, with NC Central making it 20 in 2009.

North Carolina
Western Carolina/Winston-Salem winner

Davidson
Gardner-Webb

Wake Forest
Appalachian State

Charlotte
UNC-Greensboro/Campbell winner

NC State
UNC-Wilmington

North Carolina A&T
High Point/Elon

Duke
UNC-Asheville

East Carolina
Gardner-Webb/North Carolina Central (in a couple years) winner

This could be improved by geography and by using the previous season's records to come up with a rough gauge for seeding. The games playing down to "The Final Four" can be at the highest seeds (i.e. the ACC teams) in a 3-game weekend format, so that the ACC teams can profit that way, sort of like when State hosted the BCA tournament.

isn't there a rule that prevents teams from playing in more than two preseason tournaments in a three year period?

that would kind of ruin this idea

^ I have read this thread. I just thought it would be a nice idea, and it's not like anyone's ideas on here, like bringing back the Dixie Classic, will ever become reality anyway. And besides, throw the NCAA some money and they'll change their rules on the fly.

It's basketball, not football. If we are afraid of one of those schools beating us, we have bigger issues.

The Dixie Classic will never come back for many reasons... including the sentiment held by Jimmy V, Coack K, and Dean Smith that the tourney only hurt the Big 4 and ACC because it mean every year one of these great programs was starting the season 0-2. The ACC is difficult enough that you don't need extra games between top programs. If anything, just guarantee that the Big 4 always play twice in conference play. Its pathetic that State and Duke only play once most years. If anything further reduce OOC and preseason tourneys and play EVERYONE in the conference twice.... 22 Conference games and only 8-10 OOC games.
