^^^^ thank god, because otherwise it would have led to a very awkward situation.

exactly. that's the only good to come from it.

btw, we wanted to get married earlier, but because of different citizenships, had a hard time finding a country where the process would be easy.

as they say, god works in mysterious ways.

(we finally found MAURITIUS and were going to go there in april/may)

^^^ Congrats. As ^^ said, we just got engaged a few weeks back. I had a smile plastered on my face for a week straight, and still feel giddy when I sit back and think about how happy I'll be the rest of my life.

One of the reasons we didn't want to get married in a church/have a priest marry us is because of the stupid ass counseling.

My advice for the wedding planning, pick your battles well. No matter how nice or sweet the girl is, she can and will turn on you in a dispute over "her special day."

Don't back down if there is something you want, but I would suggest not wanting too much.

^^ haha nice

It's been cool so far for us because my sweetie and I have been on the same page about everything! He's been quite involved with the planning too (well, he was before he went overseas), and we're still talking about stuff now through email and on the phone, when we get the chance. No battles so far, with each other anyway, and hopefully it will stay that way!

NICE!!!! CONGRATS!

I remember our engagement day crystal clear -- what an awesome experience.

Our engagement was a painstaking 13 months (hadta graduate and all), but was well worth the wait. Married life is the hottness if you pick the right one LIVE IT UP!

P.S. -- Wedding planning isn't all that bad. It's a LOT to do, but if you can coax your / her mom into taking on a lot of the reponsibility (typically isn't hard, they love this stuff), you can just sit & watch for most of it. Ours wasn't stressful and didn't elicit any bickering, but we had TONS of help from friends & family along the way. BTW, go ahead & start an Excel spreadsheet with colums like "Name, Quanity of folks in family, RSVP?, Address, Gift received, etc." Makes sending thank you notes a breeze and starts up a nice address book for your newly combined family list.

I can't think of too much that a guy should give a shit about in wedding planning.

1. Open bar
2. Less than astronomical amount of guests

Congrats!!!

The like 3 or 4 couple I knew in college who got engaged all broke it off, but they all set over a year to 5 years until the wedding so you knew they weren't serious about it anyways. It was just they needed to move ahead a stage in a relationship to keep it alive for the time being. I've only ever been to weddings of people I only sorta knew because no one I'm close friends with has ever gone through with it.

Best wishes!

my fiance and I are having a blast planning everything. He has a few specifics he really wants and that actually helped me get started on the planning. Everything else i've been looking at some options that I like, narrowing them down and then we decide together what we like best. Ours will be outdoors in the fall on the sound. YAY!

Congrats on the engagement!

Everyone should do marriage counseling. Its amazing how many people get married without knowing about or talking through very big issues that simply seem obvious.
